Poetry: Do unto others

by John Wedlake

Created on: April 15, 2008

The sun up high in the blistering sky
causes people to call out for water,
But War's not concerned about who can survive
And is only interested in slaughter.
The emaciated kids with skeletal ribs
Cry out for food and relief.
Now those that care, are surely aware,
That their lives could also be brief.
The charity worker is no more immune
To the brutality seen, than those they seek to aid.
In our complacent world it's a different tune
As we sit in our armchairs unafraid.
TV shows the terrible scenes, alien to our way of life
And we murmur our horror at all that we see
In a separate world world full of strife,
So we say, "Any chance of another cup of tea?"
Forget do unto others, as we really don't care.
But the terror comes closer, to wherever we be,
As we carry on living blissfully unaware
That it could bring us all down - for eternity.
