We live in interesting times.
We are faced with two presidential candidates who break the mold. They are not white Anglo Saxon males. One is half black and half white and the other is female. I believe that although the win of either candidate would be historically important, the win of Barack Obama will be more important.
Let me tell you why I think that the win of Barack Obama would be more historically important than the win of Hiliary Clinton...
To begin, let me bring a bit of dirty laundry, ancient history, into the mix of things as, although most of us do not think about it, history affects the present.
Abolitionist literature talking about the need to abolish slavery gathered steam in 1830 and thereafter resulted in the right for African Americans to be free in the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. Blacks obtained the right to vote then according to the Constitution of the United States but in reality, they were still unable to vote in many instances. It was not until 1963 that African Americans were given legal protections that made their votes more likely to be cast and counted. Women began fighting for the abolition of slavery along with the blacks and then realized that they themselves needed rights. They attained the right to vote in 1920, long before the majority of the Black people attained their full untrammeled voting rights. The win of Barack Obama would be a testament to the fact that this Nation has changed and has ended its long history of injustice to the African American people.
Women have been run for vice president before and have contemplated running for President. This is the first time that any black man has tried to run for either vice president or president. As this is the first black presidental candidate we are already witnessing something historic. A win would be even more history making.
Added to this is the fact that this is a half black and half white man with ties to Africa and with ties, indirectly, through his father to the Muslim people, even though he himself is a Christian, and you have a win that could become even more historically important to future generations.
