Myths come from all over the world. What mythologies would you like to expand your knowledge of?

As you may have an interest in some mythologies, there is still a favorite mythology that you know too much about. Is it Greek, Celtic, Aborigine, Native American?

Or, in other words, what is your favorite creature. Why is that creature your favorite? What would you do if you met it?

Are our modern day fairy tales our mythology? Do you think that mythology stems from fairy tales?

What brings you to mythology? How did you get interested in mythology? What part of mythology do you find interesting? Is it the way that people thought of the world in the old days? or maybe the stories themselves?

If there was one thing that you could change about the North American culture, what would it be and why?

Marcus started this conversation: "For five-plus years, a genocide has gone unchecked in Africa.  The Democratic (sarcasm) Republic of the Congo has endured a combination of civil war, tribal genocide and disease.  So far, almost six million have died.  And the only news media doing ANYTHING about this tragedy is the FOX Channel drama, "24".

We must create more titles to be discussion about this ongoing nightmare."

What are your thoughts? Do you feel that there is a Congo Crisis? What do you think we should do about it? Should other countries get involved?

The mroe I read the more I think that there is a great deal of truth in passed down mythology. I use Greek mythology as an example as it is an area I know most about.

Take the Trojan War's most people thought that they were just a story writen by Homer, and yet the work of Schliemann uncovered Troy.

The stories of Theseus include a part where the angered Amazon's attacked Athens. Total fiction? and yet excavations have uncovered a battle that backs up the story.

I am not talking so much about the deities but much of the mythology we know was simply a way that people used to record history in a way that would be remembered before the written word was widely used.

So how much truth do you think there is in mythology, and is there any area that you hope have some basis in truth?

I know that this is a bit delayed. But it surprises me that China was the one to get Korea to sit back in on the peace talks. I wonder what they did?

I think Barrack is making a huge mistake. He claimed to not want to raise taxes on those who could not afford them, but in a round about way, he has been doing just that.

By taxing those who make over 200k, he has made it less possible for them to spend money to help recover the economy. He has raised taxes on everything else to boot.

The pilot tax is just flat ridiculous. Flying was already an expensive hobby, now its a hobby that is just too expensive. And right when NASA is trying its best to recover the Space Project. (There is a contest for people to make airplanes that can exit our atmosphere. The contest is funded by NASA.)

I predict that there will be a lot more "hidden" taxes that will suck the money out of our pockets, and they will affect everyone, not just the 'rich'.

I am curious about this one. It seems like America has long lost its religious values. But it doesnt look like it in Europe.

I was lucky. I was allowed to explore my spirituality freely and found what works for me. But I hear stories of others who are not so lucky. They are forced to grind through one religion or another or lose the respect of their family and friends. I dont think that this is a fair way to treat religion.

I mean, its bad enough that the country seems to be trying to overdue religious freedom. I mean, Im wiccan and I have no problem with Christmas. Heaven knows, I am one of the first people out there driving around to see how people decorate their homes.

But forcing religion on kids.. it just seems wrong. I think as parents we should set an example by following our chosen religion and then let our kids decide what works for them.

Though LA is one of the trendiest places on the planet, it is outstriped by New York. Almost everything, and anything, seems to happen on the East Coast. It seems liks issues that come up are taken more seriously if they are coming from the Eastern side of our country. Things on the west coast go unnoticed, to the point of corrupt local goverments, etc, It just doesnt seem fair to me.

A dollar a few years ago would have been enough to buy four candy bars, two bottles of pop, etc. Now, it is barely enough to pay for a cand-bar wrapper.

Its stupid how the value of money is going downhill. Its still technically the same. We get our paychecks raised, but taxes get raised on us, or on the corps we buy supplies from, and in the end we are paying the same amount for the same things.

Am I the only one noticing this?

I was wondering what other people felt about personal morals. Do you think that they are decaying? Are parents becoming lax in teaching their children about morals? What do you think?

Our lives are very different than our parents were. Have our personal morals changed to match? Should they? Plese let me know what you think.

Though I may be younger than the desired age for this post, I believe this is an important matter. I am seventeen years of age, and all my life I have been told what to do, what to follow, who to follow, who I should trust, etc. Morals from my family have been handed to me left and right. There are so many that I agree with; however, there are so many that i don't. As you mentioned, our lives are different from our parents'! Isn't this the truth? Really, no matter the age, the child's life is going to be different from their parents'. I believe parents help their children and I believe they only want the best for their children, but I think most of us find our own morals to follow. Sure, we may incorporate some of the things out parents taught us, but in all honesty we tend to go on our own path even with our morals. And yes, I believe that our morals should change. I mean, you didn't stay the same person your whole life, so why should your morals? If you can change personalities, looks, beliefs, eating habits, etc. most of the time your morals will change because you have changed. I believe your morals should match who you are. We are all different and we all have our own opinions. If we all tried to believe what our parents taught us, then where will the change come from? Maybe, I'm not making sense..I tried to give my point of view though. :)

Hello! I have wondered some of the same things... My views vary depending on situations; however, I believe that in this day and age parents are to afraid, don't care, or don't want to push anything on their children. I have been out so many times, just to Walmart or Kroger, and I have seen the children DEMAND that their mom buy them something, and if their mom even thinks about it they throw a cry-baby tantrum for everyone to watch and listen. It's ridiculous! I believe parents overlook how their child is acting. I believe that they think their child will 'pick up' morals on their own. Some parents are really great at teaching their children morals, but where I live, morals are looked passed. If the child doesn't get them, then they are just left alone to try and figure it out. It really is sad how many parents have forgotten to even teach their children manners. I'm not sure on whether to say that it's decaying.. I just think it's being forgotten...

Now, my parents did a pretty good job at teaching me morals. I have gone away from most of them, I admit. I didn't do it purposely, I just found different parts of who I am and I went with it. Along with it came different beliefs and morals. I still follow what I can of my parents morals and I still respect their morals; however, I try to follow mine as well.

That is a good instance to bring up. And its very true. I though that the habits of the children often reflect what they see at home. If their parents are demanding of each other or their children, the child will also become demanding.

Another possible cause is that the child has used the same approach in the past and got what they wanted, so they automatically use that approach again.

I believe you are right. Parents should be consistent on what is allowed with their children. If their children misbehave at the store, they should think of something to stop that from happening again, such as a punishment, or not bringing them to the store in the first place. Or they could just explain that that behavior is intolerable.

Sadly, I know from experience that parents are leery about punishing their children because of Children Services. Children Services are widely known for abusing their power and it is hard for parents to appropriately punish their children when they fear that said children will be taken away.

Again, this is a great point to bring up and it does reflect on personal morals in todays society. Without proper discipline and education of their children, their children will grow up to be just as demanding as adults. Its not a good way to start life.

Re: Your own morals

Yes, I agree with you. To be your own person, you have to find your own set of values. Of course, this does not mean discarding what has gone before. You build on what you have been taught, on what you have observed, and on your own experiences.

One of my biggest morals concerns honesty and lying. I hate being lied to. It turned my life upside down and pretty much forced me to completely start over. So I do my best not to lie to people.

I think that morals have modernized and are, of course, affected by what is around us. As a society, we have become desensitized to a lot of things that older generations would have had a freak about. It wasnt too long ago that women's skirts had to be to the ankles, and today its common to see girls with see-through bouses walking down the street, or women in bras on TV.

I think morals have changed greatly, and maybe not so much for the better.

Thank you so much for asking!  It's about personal growth, embracing life and living it in true contentment.  I've wanted to do it since I was a child.  I'm electrified since I've decided to act on it!  Don't know what I'm doing but I'm jumping in, starting the notes, etc.  Here we go!!!  YES!  Love your last name by the way!

My best to you ~

Hi, Cat

I agree with you, it's not all for the better. However, it IS better that young women are allowed out of the house without a chaperone, and are allowed to dress as they please, work as they please, and love as they please. Of course, if things seem to go too far, there will be a backlash.

My best,

Yes, many, many things go way too far nowadays. I am a strong believer in keeping my areas covered appropriately. I wear skirts, but usually at least to the knees. If not, then I have on some pants or shorts underneath. And my top is always covered and contained. I don't think parents care how their teens look anymore, but I care how I look. I don't want to be "labeled".

Hello members of the forum.

Until now, I have never had a reason to hunt down the Society & Lifestyles forum.

Since I've confined my community interaction primarily to the Help Desk and Content sections of those mainstay "Discussion Boards," I had few or no occasions to use what I deduce to had been channel-specific boards now archived there.

For probably the first time, I came to the Community-Help to find Soc & Lfsl, and it turned out to be those old Archives.

I seemed to recall an old public notice posted to Helium members about something like that "shutting down" and how there was a glorious future ahead in the form of new boards. I never saw them appear in the Discussion Board and kept wondering where they were until I forgot about it.

These must be the new boards!

So, then, while generality vacuums interest, it goes off and splits into another, specific case one day and is no longer source-assimilate. What were you talking about on that freezing, cold, sun-shy day, anyway when Helium was going through all kinds of turgid new changes and letting us in on that exciting brave new Helium?

These must be the new boards!

Veni, vedi, vici the Notice: , and thanks for the message.

Now I know what to look for in case I ever see it again : )

So the first thing I came here to do was to Subscribe and make my posting. And the next thing you know, I find about 11 isolated subcultures to Society and Lifestyles.

My interest so specific is in a cyberculture forum.
