AuthorWhere’s the respect for authority?

Posted on Feb 24, 09 at 11:13 PM

I see more and more rude and out of control children in this country. Everyone seems to make excuses for their bad behaviour - from blaming their schools to blaming their parents. The bottom line is not placing the blame but instituting a solution and the sooner the better!

I see this as a problem of lack of discipline. Gone are the days when teachers expected and got respect and when parents supported school discipline as a matter of course. With the introduction of 'child rights' , the rights of adult individuals to a safe and peaceful existence have gone out the window. Youths can terrorise a neighbourhood with impunity but god forbid that an adult shoud stand up to them and fight back.

All our children have been taught over the past 30 years is how to be rude, demanding and selfish. They have stamped their feet and been patted on the head. Education has been 'dumbed down' to accommodate their failing grades and we now have two generations of spoilt brats with little education and even less common sense.

How do we get back to raising responsible and sensible young people?

It's not just your country, my friend. The up & coming brats in the US are absolutely lost when it comes to respect/manners, etc.. This will lead to another (worse) generation of ill-mannered beings, and so forth and so on it'll go.

It's not just disrespect for authority either, it's lack of human respect.

Hi Marty - you got here at last :)

I see it more as a lack of self respect - in order to respect others, you must surely learn how to respect yourself first? I agree, with each generation the problem gets worse - parents who never learned the basics of good behaviour are hardly likely to teach it to their own children!

We have a serious growth in teen pregnancies here too. Iresponsible and badly behaved teens are not likely to make particularly good parents. How can they teach good manners when they have none themselves and no understanding of the concept?

We, as a society, have to find some solutions! Fast!

Jayne :)

Maybe you can post some direct links to these forums Jayne, and get some Brits over here to go with the grits? Of course, there's not that many who participate on the Helium side of the tracks.

Hey guys... I finally figured out why I couldn't post!  You have to "join the Group" not just subscribe to the forum... that simply sends you a message every time there's a post! duh!

I think our society and economy along with priotizing (material accumilation)dictates that both parents be in the workforce.  Though, for many, that is becoming a necessity rather than a choice simply to make ends meet in an ever increasing inflationary economy.  It has created generations of attention-starved, resentful, latch-key kids who are educated by strangers (usually friends, movies and media) without the nurturing guidance of morality, respect and compassion.

I'm afraid the "me" generation (who were given too much) that were spawned by the children of depression era parents(who had nothing) have given birth to the "screw you" generation.  They confuse spritualism with a lack of religous belief and have little understanding or need for morality, rather, they opt for justification of their actions by whatever means available.

I could preach about this for hours... but I won't.  These kids are like a virus and infect everything they come into contact with, making it difficult, if not nearly impossible for consciencous parents to raise well behaved and respectful children with the hope of sending productive and responsible adults into the world and the future.

Hey Marty :)

As soon as I get 'back on board' (so to speak) I will do just that. At the moment this is a very hit and miss affair but I'm sure it'll get better the more we use it?

Maybe I could ask Carly to post some links over in Helium for me?

Um . . . hi there Carly - please can you go post me some links :)  (lol)

Glad to made it here - beginning to feel rather lonely out here in the netherworld!

No, I meant find your way to my other zones - LOL  You can now though :)

I agree about kids not getting enough time with their parents but I'm not sure I completely blame the parents. Here in the UK, government interference has torn the family unit apart - they don't seem to value  marriage  and seem to actively encourage single motherhood. The cash incentive to have children here is very high - with the benefits you can get for four children, you may never have to work a day in your life!

Teen pregnancy is on the rise so mothers are getting younger and younger - 15/16 seems to be quite normal here! Very few have any parenting skills - their mothers were most likely teen mothers too?

This whole benefits system has to be turned around but I can't see any government brave enough to stop benefits and risk loosing power!

Jayne, you could take the UK out of this thought, and substitute US, and not change a thing ... except the spelling of "losing" :)
