Hi, I'm wondering if anyone is following the uproar connected with for-profit college and universities.
What's your take on the issue?
I've worked and been a student for both not-for-profit and for profit institutions and do believe there are profit motivations attached to each. The not-for-profit institution does have a saving grace though. Students have to meet national assessment standards before continuing forward with their college credit programs. I teach at a private university and cannot say the same occurs. Plenty of students are enrolled in college credit programs who are not academically prepared to be there. Yet, there's been no assessment filter in place to screen them.
There's been a slight change in this but it doesnt involve national assessments. Instead, entering students are placed in a pending status, and if they do not successfully make it through their introductory courses, they are turned away. There is no charge to their financial aid during this pending course.
Anyone else have an opinion or experience with this issue?
