The standards are different because it is HARDER for a man to get laid than a woman. Men have to work harder to get laid than woman do. So there's more prestige.
Any woman, walking into a bar, would be able to fit at least one man willing to have sex with her. If not more. Even unattractive women can find at least one man.
Any man, walking into a bar, would struggle to find a woman to have sex with him unless he was attractive. Men have to 'work' at charming women to have sex with ANY woman. Women may struggle to have sex with 'desirable' men, but if they need to get laid, they can.
How many twenty-year-old woman virgins do you know (who want to get laid but can't)? Not that many. How many twenty-year-old men who are virgins but don't want to be do you know? I'm sure we can rustle up a few.
There's a double standard in how easy it is to get laid. That leads to the double standard in the respect 'players' and the lack of respect 'sl*ts' get.
It's basic economics. Supply of women wanting to sleep with anyone = low. Supply of men willing to sleep with anyone = High. There you go. Wanting to pick and choose where you want to be equal and where you don't doesn't work. Nor does saying standards should be equal when the reality isn't equal.
If we want to remove the sl*t/stud disparity, more women have to be willing to sleep with anyone - just like the average man is. Or men have to not want to sleep with anyone. One of the genders must change their attitudes. Equality in access to casual sex will lead to equality of attitudes and standards to sexual promiscuity. Just saying that men and women should be equal in the respect they get by sleeping around doesn't achieve anything.
Women - back up your desire for equality by not being so discriminating in who you sleep with. Men - grow some courage and pick who you want to sleep with. Don't sleep with any woman!
Until this reality changes, the double-standard will remain. The double standard, of players and studs, of sl*ts and sla*s, is fair.
The standards are different because it is considerably more difficult for a man to get laid than a woman. Men have to work harder to get laid than woman do. So there's more prestige.
Change the reality on the dancefloor and the bar, and you can change the prestige accorded to a player and the venom directed to promiscous women.
Any woman can easily find a man to sleep with. Not so for any man.

Two months ago, I watched an episode of "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit (SVU)". I caught on halfway through the show. There happened to a be a trial that pitted a professor accused of raping his graduate assistant. The assistant D.A. presented state's evidence. After a late night of grading exams, the suspect attacked the defendant in his classroom. He forced himself on her. He penetrated her. And after he was done, he threatened to have her scholarship revoked if she disclosed the incident.
The professor faced first-degree sexual assault and extortion charges. During the trial, his lawyer ripped into his victim's sexual history. She was 22 years old. Five boyfriends testified to have slept with her. Plus, she had a couple of casual flings come forward. Some of the boyfriends treated her relationships kind. The casual flings confessed to have met her at parties. One occasion ended up with a one-night stand.
As in usual outcomes, the female victim became a w*. The accused's lawyer viciously attacked her credibility. Her story of shame got lost in her explanations for the failed relationships and X-rated flings. Her rapist faced two felony counts and a possible 25 years in prison. He accepted a plea bargain of a three to nine-year sentence on extortion. The rape charge vanished.
Unfortunate ly, Hollywood's portrayal of rape trials isn't all fantasy. Women who come forward are dehumanized. Their histories are scrutinized and picked through. A one-night stand is embellished into a pattern of promisciuity. For too long, society allowed men to get away with being womanizers and male w*s. When a woman showed one ounce of sexual liberation, she is branded as a tramp. That public ridicule worked to keep victims silent and ashamed.
In a male-dominated society, we have the age-old double standard. "Boys will be boys" gave men an excuse to do wrong without punishment. They created a system. They gave themselves a "free pass" to have as many sexual partners they wanted. Hugh Hefner is worshipped as a playboy. He even started a magazine that rejected monogamy. His Playboy mansion has scantily-clad women, at least half his age, at his beckon call. Hefner received acclaim for his perverse, sexual activities. However, Hollywood "madam", Heidi Fleiss received a three year, prison sentence for pandering and prostitution. A woman isn't allowed to do what a man can do; legal or illegal.
Ridiculous, reality shows, like "The Bachelor", "A Real Chance at Love", "Rock of Love" and "Flavor of Love" contributed to celebrating men who mistreated, manipulate and use women. These shows deserved to be put off the air, instead of getting second seasons. Real men aren't supposed to have a wife, a mistress and three girlfriends. Real men aren't supposed to serial date women with good jobs for their weekly paychecks. Are women able to do those things without public scorn? No. Then, why as a nation, we pat these guys on the back for using our beautiful gender?
As long as only men rule, our nation is bound to be fools.
