I'm writing this article after the 2007 season is over and the Dolphins have already finished their most horrendous season ever. It is easy in hindsight to say that the Dolphins made a huge blunder in not selecting Brady Quinn in the draft, but I don't believe that selection alone would have made much of a difference in the outcome of the Dolphins' season.
Before I go on, let me preface everything I am about to say with this: I believe the Dolphins should have drafted Brady Quinn because he would have been a quarterback they could have built the franchise around. This was my belief even before this disaster of a season.
Right now the Dolphins are in one of the most drastic rebuild modes they have ever been in through out their entire span of existence. If they had drafted Quinn, they would at least have a place to start. Right now they are left with a second year QB who is still unproven and an almost too old timer whom you can't rely on (as history states) to stay healthy the entire season.
The Dolphins have been very aggressive in hiring new personnel and the hiring of Bill Parcells and Tony Sparano seems to be the right fit. Only time will tell if this proves to be true. My point is, if they already had a quality QB like Quinn in place the turn-around would in all likelihood happen at a much faster pace.
With Quinn in place all that would need to be done is draft or trade personnel in or out of key weak spots. Right now the job is starting at ground zero.
I do not envy Mr. Parcells' or Mr. Sparanos' positions or the task they are about to begin. There will be some very trying times ahead for these two individuals and even if they had Quinn to start with it would have been tough, but, again it would have left one less thing to fix.
Now Brady Quinn sits the bench in Cleveland behind Derek Anderson and Ken Dorsey as the third QB. With the stats that Anderson put up this year I don't see, barring an injury, where Brady will be getting any playing time soon. Who knows, maybe the Dolphins could work out a trade with the Browns! Stranger things have happened!

It is far too soon to say if it was a complete failure, as Quinn may not have had a great year if he was the starter. He went to Cleveland and only had 1 drive and it was ok but really too soon to say if he's a bust completely. Would this be a missed opportunity? Well, that depends on how you look at it. Quinn right now has been touted and given the title for whatever reason the savior and a great quarterback before even taking the field. It's not easy to transition from the college ranks all the way to the pros. Some men have done well but there are others who haven't. I think Miami really needs a major overhaul and get some confidence in that team. Maybe I'm seeing things but I think the Dolphins didn't look too enthusiastic about being on the field and pretty much accepted defeat before the games even began.
I'm not sure if Quinn is going to be the superstar that he had been given. He pretty much shot himself in the foot by holding out against the Cleveland Browns for a chance at the starting position starting just last season. One drive doesn't make a career but if this is any indication, then Brady Quinn will be one of the most overhyped players that turned out to be a bust but I don't know about the worst of all-time since Ryan Leaf has that position pretty much unchallenged.
The only true way to say it will be a complete 100% missed opportunity is just wait at least a couple years and see where this is and where Brady Quinn is exactly. Right now, to me I'm not buying the hype or anything of that effect and I don't necessarily look at the draft and look at everything on paper. On paper, it may look like it but games aren't won on paper. Last time I checked, the only thing that will make a difference will be the end results. Who is to say if it will be a guaranteed failure for that franchise? It's not for anyone to say for sure, it's really what happens on the field that will make the difference. That's like trying to judge a book by its cover and quite honestly doesn't give a fair assessment of the team's future. I say it wasn't a missed opportunity right now but in the future it might be if the Miami Dolphins have another season like this past season going 1-15.
