We've all heard about the long-standing ban on American citizens visiting or doing business with Cuba. Perhaps because it's forbidden, it just makes it that much more intriguing to the adventurous travelers of the United States. After all, it seems we love to do exactly those things we're told we can't do.
For those who dare to buck the system and break the rules, there are ways to live out your dream of visiting this exotic locale. Travel agents in Mexico and Canada alike have already helped thousands of Americans vacation in Cuba, which is continually evolving into a popular American travel destination.
The most surprising thing about Cuba is that it's full of Americans. The sheer number of American citizens already there boggles the mind. In general, Cubans are warm, friendly people who are more than happy to have you spend your money with them. Nearly every business establishment will happily accept the American dollar, and the greenbacks flow freely. If the State Department thinks their moratorium on Cuban travel is preventing the influx of American dollars into Cuba, they are sorely mistaken.
As a resort destination, Cuban beaches can hold their own against any other Caribbean destination. Builders have now begun to cash in on the demand for exciting overseas getaways, and are building to suit American buyers. Although it may follow a circuitous route, make no mistake that business is being done in Cuba, by Americans.
Although we are still at a political impasse with Cuba, times are slowly changing. Castro's position isn't quite as solid as it once was, and our government's efforts to prevent commerce with Cuba are futile. If we look at the vast amount of business we have outsourced to China, adding billions of dollars to their economy, we can hardly continue to use Communism as an excuse to ignore the rich culture of our neighbor to the South.
