YES! a mega embassy can be and is justifiable. The Iraqi government has given us the land to build upon because they are our friends. They have given this land to us so that we can be a force for good in that part of the world. It's purpose is to establish diplomatic relations with all countries in that region. That requires a large facility with many employees. Not to mention all of the secondary personnel required to maintain the facility and provide services to those populating it. It has to be as large as it is because of the lack of allies in that region. We only have one major one and that is Iraq itself.
A parallel that could easily be drawn here is the law enforcement community in the United States. It would be very difficult to enforce law and order across a major city, let alone state or country, with a single police station. Instead we have many stations placed at strategic points geographically throughout our society. I'm not saying that the U.S. should try to police the world through its embassies.
The two main objectives of an embassy is to establish diplomatic relations, as stated previously, and to maintain the relations that we already have by providing a physical location for such things as meetings, brunches, and formal dinners. We have embassies located within the borders of every major ally, and it should be no surprise that we would be establishing one in Iraq.
It is commonly said that we in America simply "don't understand" the people from the middle east. There is a lot of truth in this statement, but what most people who use this statement fail to understand is that they also don't understand us. An embassy will help to alleviate that. It is a presence in that country/region that will ensure that we here in America know what the Iraqis need and want from us. Hopefully we can foster true friendships with those other countries and one day will be able to interact peacefully with them.
One last thing, to all you conspiracy theorists that believe there is a "behind the scenes" group of elitists controlling our government. Get a freaking clue. There is no single group that can control every aspect of the government. Nor is there a group that has a true desire to control it. There is no major profit from oil that any American is receiving due to the war in Iraq, and "war profiteering" is such a vague statement that it is simply absurd.

Like the Greeks did in 429 B.C defeating the invading Persian army, who vastly out numbered the small Greek army, the Greeks drew up in defense and struck out against their tormentors. Can we honestly admit that putting a mega USA base smack bang in the middle of their country is not going to cause bedlam and a possible uprising? It is common knowledge that the USA has the largest army in the world, but to put a base in Iraq is futile as well as reckless. This could cause mass hysteria, and would be regarded as a widely viewed bad idea. Simply, because this would then inform the world that the USA is once again tightening its grip on Iraq, and that they still don't know what they're doing! Such a public and hefty move would cause its neighboring countries to then become involved. The USA has been surveying Iraq even before the attack on the towers, however once it is broadcast to the world that the USA will come in close proximity with a country that it is already at war with, Iraq's neighbors and alliances may then take a stand, suggesting that the USA will then have to abide by their rules, if they are to go through with this. This could trap the USA in a sticky situation said the spider to the fly,' this could have been avoided anyway. I can understand that this will then let them keep an eye of Iraq, but I believe that this is too municipal, and can be considered rash. Then again, we never expect anything much of Bush anyway.
