The word gospel comes from the Greek word that means ‘good news’. The gospels of Jesus Christ are good news to all humanity, whether or not humanity perceives them to be so. In proclaiming his birth, the angel said in Luke 2:10 “Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.” That is good news.

In the gospels we learn that this is not the only life we will experience. We are shown that there is another eternal life after this. Eternal means our bodies and souls will be changed into a state that will never cease to exist. We are shown by Jesus’ answer to the thief on the cross that this new life will be physical, not spirit or ghostly without form, when He tells him that he will be eating with Him that evening. Jesus also walked among His people for forty days after He was resurrected. His body was changed into its eternal form and it could be seen and touched. Physically He appeared just like any other human being. What better news in a mortal world of unending tribulation, where the enemy ‘death’ awaits us all, can there be?

The gospels tell of a coming kingdom where Jesus will rule, in perfect peace and happiness, a world returned to the beauty and glory it once possessed in the Garden. This is good news.

The good news that there is an eternity of unspeakable joy awaiting us is proof that we are, and will be, loved. Love is good news and it is especially noted throughout the gospels. John 3:16 says that “God so loved the world.” The beatitudes and parables tell us there are blessing rewards waiting for us mortals just because we are forced to be mortal. In Matthew 5 the Lord Jesus tells us to love and do good to those who hate and persecute us so that we would be like our Heavenly Father who loves and does good to both the just and the unjust. How could our Father tell us to love our enemies if He himself does not?  We are exhorted to be perfect even as Our Father in Heaven is perfect.  Luke 6 tells us this perfection is moral perfection.  God is merciful to everyone, loves everyone, will do good to everyone forever.  That is Good News!

Our Heavenly Father could not merely tell all of His children He loves them and expect them to fully understand it. He had to physically prove it in a way that no other living being could do. He created a world that needed a savoir then He himself saved it. The Apostle Paul explains this love when he wrote- ‘some might die for their friends or loved ones, some may even die for a stranger but Jesus came to die for his enemies’. What can be a more perfect, greater love than that; what better news?

There are those who put conditions on His love and proclaim it must be earned or accepted. They love this darkness and the glory it gives their self-righteousness. This is not, nor will it ever be, good news to anyone but themselves. It robs God of His righteousness and glory, it robs Him of His power by giving some of it to the devil and to themselves to do whatever they want, it robs God of His love because they say he created a place of eternal suffering or extinction where there is no expression of His love and it robs Him of His wisdom because they think they can make certain wise decisions by and for themselves and others. They say He is not a Father of everyone. They have taken the eternal security that God has promised in order to revel in the insecurity of their own glory. The conditions they put on his love and righteousness can only mean the cross isn’t a guaranteed salvation for everyone, His love isn’t guaranteed for everyone. This is not good news.

The Gospel, the Good News that the Creator of the universe is the Father of the human race, is the only true hope of the world.  God will bless everyone forever.  Believe it and be saved to God’s fellowship and glory forever.  Deny it and be condemned to be satisfied with your own glory, separated from God’s fellowship and glory, forever.  In either case, God will not deny Himself, He will bless with His unchangeable and eternal wisdom, power, and love, all mankind forever.

The gospels are, indeed, good news.

For a certainty the Christian Gospels are really old news. How much of it is good will depend on the reader. Considering how many times most of the writings have been translated into different languages - and back - down through the centuries, it is amazing that any of it is considered original works. The most widely known Christian Gospel is the "Bible" and it is only in the New Testament that any good news might be found; the Old Testament is simply a historical biography of people and times considered to be of religious importance.

There has been some interesting information revealed in recent years concerning the New Testament. Modern archaeologists and scientists who study antiquities have gradually come to similar conclusions: The original writers of New Testament texts did not always agree with one another and not all of them were included in the New Testament. By the time the decision was made to add to the "Bible" the people in power decided that only specific writings would be included in the new section of the bible and it took them two hundred years to decide which. There was an agenda and specific instruction were given on what was acceptable. Under no circumstances were the works generated by women to be included.

Three hundred years after Jesus died the New Testament was finally approved; of all the chapters included, only four were based on the original teachings of those specific disciples. Of those four only one can be said to include verses from an original papyrus written by John. Most scholars agree that those were written at least thirty years after the crucifixion of Jesus. How much of the works from the original writers was actually available would be difficult to ascertain. Writings were not always passed down and how much of the original thoughts of the disciples was included is difficult to prove conclusively. How much of that was distorted through the influences of personal preferences, community proclivities and societal norms at any given time - would be difficult to measure. The original text was handed down in Greek and later translations diverted away from some of those original writings.

Buried in the texts are some shining truths that have managed to survive down through the centuries. Some of the passages are so crucial that prejudice, artifice and ignorance could not obliterate the true message Jesus was trying to get across to his followers. The problem is that so much of it is buried and misconstrued by the remainder of the works that little of the good news is left for the reader to enjoy. Far too many people have been happily willing to further misconstrue the words through interpretation at the pulpit. The simple words of love and joy that Jesus professed have been lost for the most part. Only an enlightened reader will recognize those gems that are buried under the sludge of time and translation.

Down through the centuries most people who read the Christian Gospels were not enlightened and depending on their own set of values or expectations would in turn take the words and do with them what they will, or -more likely- what they were taught by yet another unenlightened teacher with their own agenda. Fortunately the Christian Gospel is no longer used as the vanguard to perpetuate violence and hatred. However, in truth, this is actually a recent given. Even a few hundred years ago, Christianity was forced down the throats of various groups of people who were stripped of their belief system, their societies, and their natural lifestyle. Christianity has a long and bloody history and much like the radicals who have distorted the teachings of Islam today, those Christian perpetuators down through history felt fully vindicated in their stance and their struggle.

Perhaps organized religion among the Christians is near to coming full circle. Perhaps with a clear eye and a pure heart the good news that was originally meant to be shared will find its way back into the written works. That would require a new translation and an acceptance by the standing majority; an unlikely scenario any time soon. If Christianity can survive another thousand years perhaps it will happen.

New works are written all the time in different formats but remain unrecognized or are ignored as unsubstantiated because they fail to meet the acid test set by secular groups. Those Christians who are enlightened will see them for what they are and can take joy in their meaning and find hope in the message. As for now the only good news found associated to the Christian Gospel is that most current teachers are kind and generous. Their good intentions are firmly planted in the most important message Jesus had; that we love one another. Just that - no other trappings or rituals or worshiping is necessary - simply love one another.
