The sad thing about election time is that all candidates paint themselves in Grey. Everyone is terrified to express an opinion.
Politics ceases to be about issues and more like MTV. What is the flavor of the month and can we get an endorsement from Kelly Clarkson. Is it possible to get Hillary to do a spot for 'Rock the Vote' and will John Edwards guest host on TRL.
I think it's sad that we don't have a Candidate that will say to the Citizens, "I'm asking you to look at my record and then trust me to lead you."
Instead we have Candidates that say look at me. "What ever you think, I think. Whatever you want, I want. You want homosexuals, I love homosexuals. You want blacks and women in power, thats what I want too... Forget about everything I have ever done, if you elect me it will be just like you being in charge, because what you want I want. You hate the war, I hate the war. You like the war ? I voted for the war. Hollywood loves me. I have been on the Lettermen Show. Help me choose a Campaign song. I worry about the environment. Look at me, look at me."
The American Presidency is a popularity contest. And just like the most popular kid in your school they will say and do anything to be at the top of the heap.
Every question is pre-arranged and every answer is calculated to please the majority. The madness that the thinking person recognizes in our Candidates is nothing more than a twisted reflection of the demanding and fickle American Public.
The thing you will not see from our Candidates until after the election is honesty.
As a whole the Conservatives and Republicans have maintained a united front against terrorism, and in support of the American troops. To honestly believe that they would change their minds right before election is silly.
Democrats have shown themselves to be more than willing to endanger our troops by withholding funding for a war we are involved in (whether or not we want to be), and to make derogatory and slanderous statements against a sitting President and his army's while they are involved in Combat, and while they are on foreign soil.
At this point in the War and the Election the truth on the Candidates standings about the war is available to anyone who is actually interested enough to do some research or read a book.
I guess I would have to say that the Republican Leaders are trying to make we, 'the voters' believe whatever we need to believe to give them our vote. And the Democratic Leaders are doing the exact same thing.
I believe however that the Republicans support the war, our troops, and our President, and will continue to do so when and if they should win the next Presidency.

Republican leaders are not pulling away their support of the War in Iraq, they are pulling their backing from "nation building". Any definable enemy in Iraq was defeated long ago, the presence of American troops there today is because of the inability of Iraq to unite as a country to move ahead without their former tyrant.
The quagmire remaining in Iraq is unacceptable to republican, and democratic leaders today. Republican leaders today are uniting in support of forcing Iraq to become accountable in their future security. Their former support of action in Iraq has not essentially changed, but today is today. Iraq's neighbors need to be held accountable for securing the region, not the U. S. military.
Middle eastern nations must now step up and confront radical terrorists. At the risk of sounding arrogant, the United States can survive without imported oil if it must. The rationing would be terribly painful, making memories of the war effort during World War II seem like a pleasant dream. If necessary, the same type of sacrifice of some of our luxuries might come to pass if the "oil sheiks" don't wake up to the reality that the day will come when they have to "pony-up".
The true patriotic leaders of the United States still defend freedom, and our way of life. Politics may dictate some reposturing, but the leaders of America still believe in freedom, and the costs that it sometimes entails.
