Wolverine

Before even examining the qualities of both Wolverine and Sabertooth, its clear that Wolverine would win, because the good guys always win!

But that aside, even if he wasn't on the side of the good guys, Wolverine undoubtedly would be the champion of the challenge.

Firstly, Wolverine's amazing healing power would be the weight that would definitely tip the scale. After all, how do you defeat someone who just won't die? Despite Sabertooth's immense strength, pitting him against the ability to heal, would be akin to watching him punch a bag of an unbreakable material, futile to say the least. Any hits that he does get on Wolverine would be easily healed, and without any tools of any sort that can deal fatal blows, Sabertooth would never stand a chance.

Secondly, to add injury to insult, while the mental image of Sabertooth futilely hitting a punching bag is amusing, it would be inaccurate. Wolverine possesses not only his amazing healing powers, but also his adamantine claws. To factor this into the mental image, now put on a pair of indestructible claws onto the punching bag that scratch and injure Sabertooth every time he hits it. Sabertooth's immense strength and heightened senses may help him avoid some of the attacks, dodging the punching bag swinging at him, but with so much to concentrate on, he stands no chance of winning.

Lastly, now give that punching bag strength and intelligence. Sabertooth's intelligence, like his chosen animal, is primitive to say the least. Charging blindly, with little or no strategy, the odds that Sabertooth have are low even without pitting him against Wolverine. While Wolverine does practice a similar style at times, letting emotions get the better of him, he often plans in advance, knowing when to push forward and when to back off, a result of his hard won experience.

In short, the odds of Sabertooth defeating the dodging twisting punching bag with claws and indestructibility, are nil.

Sabertooth

In a fight between the sabertooth tiger and the wolverine, the sabertooth tiger would undoubtedly be the victor if you take a look at all known facts about both species.

The sabertooth tiger was a much larger animal than a wolverine. The sabertooth was 4-5 feet long and weighed on the average 440 pounds. It was an animal the size of a modern day African lion. The adult sabertooth tiger's powerful canines were approximately 7 inches long, with a serated edge on the back of the tooth which allowed them to easily rip into the flesh of their prey. They could actually stab a prey to death with the large canines and let it bleed to death. A stab into the skull of the prey would have rendered the prey helpless, making it an easy kill. An ancient wolf fossil was found with a sabertooth tiger's canine embedded in the skull. This signifies the sabertoot usually had success at cracking the skulls of their prey open with the large canines. A sabertooth's jaws opened to an angle of 120 degrees, whereas today's lion's jaw only opens to about 65 degrees. With the damage today's lion's jaws can inflict, imagine just how powerful and deadly the force of the sabertooth tiger's jaws would have been when coming down upon their prey!

The sabertooth tiger's back and shoulders were very muscular. Due to their build they were probably not a fast runner. Therefore, the sabertooth probably had to ambush larger pray, as does a wolverine.

The wolverine is a clever animal of the weasel family, but it is shy. It is much smaller than a sabertooth tiger was. An adult wolverine averages 25-34 inches long and it only weighs on average 22-55 pounds. It is equivalent in size of today's medium size dog. The size of the wolverine alone makes it impossible for one to think it could win in a fight against a sabertooth tiger.

The wolverine has a powerful back and legs. It is stocky and muscular and is always either at full speed, necessary in order for it to stay on top of the snow, or it is at a dead stop. The wolverine has to ambush prey. It would be helpless if it were ambushed in snow.

While a wolverine has been known to kill large prey like a bear or moose, it is only when these large animals have been weakened by winter or caught in a snow bank. They could not otherwise kill prey of that size.

Looking at all the statistics, one must conclude the wolverine is no match for a sabertooth tiger.
