Wolverine

If Wolverine and Sabertooth got into a fight, who would win? What kind of question is that? My contention is with the word "if". Why? These two have battled on numerous occasions. Not to say that Wolverine has not taken a few losses, but by and large, he is the winner every time.

Some would even argue that it is Wolverine's adamantium-laced skeleton and claws that give him the upper hand. This, however, is not the case. On two occasions Wolverine has bested Sabertooth in battle without this advantage.

The first time was during Sabertooth's stay at the X-Mansion to "cure" his blood lust. During this battle, both combatants were without the adamantium advantage. In the end, Wolverine popped one of his bone claws into the brain of Sabertooth, rendering him brain-damaged for awhile.

Another example is when Apocalypse had an adamantium enhanced Sabertooth battle Wolverine, still without the unbreakable metal alloy, in order to determine who would be the new leader of his Four Horseman. Wolverine was victorious, and was transformed into the Horseman, Death, now with the adamantium-laced skeleton once again.

There have been more skirmishes that have been won by Wolverine. Recently, during the Romulus arc in Wolverine's self titled series, Sabertooth was slain by Wolverine. There is none more decisive a victory than this.

So again, I ask: How could you even wonder who would win a fight between the two of these most feral men? Is it not obvious? If it is not, I suggest you meander into a comic shop, and brush up on your "history."

Sabertooth

I go with Sabertooth on this one. It isn't because he is my favorite of the X-men. He barely makes the top five to be more precise. The issue at hand was who would win a fight between the two brothers that were Sabertooth and Wolverine. They both had many things in common. The fact that they were brothers started the dynamic relationship between the two.

While they were both born with mutant powers, they worked as a team throughout the early years of their lives. Even though they had somewhat of an immortality about them, they watched out for each other. They had an ingrained warrior spirit that made them the perfect type for the needs of the military. This is something that they both did together for many years over the course of countless wars. All the time they worked together, watching each others back.

This worked out fine until another figure came into their life. Stryker. Under the flag of patriotism, he brought together others like themselves. This team became an unstoppable force. Once it became clear that the goals of the team were not honorable, Wolverine wanted out. He wanted to live a "normal" life. He just wanted to fit in with the humans. He suppressed his mutant ability. He hid it from everyone.

Sabertooth on the other hand had no problem with his powers. He saw himself as the next step in human evolution, and in this it made him better than the lowly humans. He actually would enjoy the killing. He didn't try to suppress his powers in any way. He actually continued to use them. This is the major reason that I believe that he would be the one that would be the victor in the fight.

While Wolverine suppressed and hid, it would in effect be the same as a master of martial arts deciding that he no longer needed to practice anymore. Sabertooth continued to kill and fight the entire time. This would keep his fighting and killing instincts honed like a samurai's sword. He had no moral dilemma to deal with. He enjoyed the killing and practiced everyday.

In a perfect world (or one in a comic book or movie) the good guy will come out on top. That isn't the world that we are talking about here. We are talking about pure fighting ability. The plain and simple fact is this: The one that has spent his entire life perfecting his ability and practicing non stop will win over the one that turned his back on it. If you don't practice and use a skill you will lose it plain and simple.

So, with a heavy heart, I have to say that Sabertooth would in fact beat Wolverine in a one on one fight. That doesn't mean that Sabertooth is the better person (or mutant) morally, just the better fighter. In the real world, it is a rare thing indeed that the righteous person comes out on top.
