When I first read this question the first thing to pop into my head was "of course you can." Right now I am working online, and I guess I would be the proof that is needed to show that you can in fact earn a living online. Don't get me wrong I'm not making millions a year, but I am getting by.
Generally I do not spend a lot of time on PTC type sites because I would have to click for days and days just to earn a dollar, and that just seems crazy to me. I have never been the type to have legions of people from around the world clicking on sites all day for hopes that these fraction of a pennies add up. I do however know a few people who have been successful with this.
One of the first things that I did to earn extra money was get paid to surf sites. There are sites out there who will pay you to surf sites. These companies pay for this because the more people that access their site the higher they are on the list when someone uses a search engine such as Google. You wont make a lot with these types of sites but I average a good $25 a week or so.
Another great way to earn money is by writing. Writing with sites such as Helium, and Associated content. I write a few articles every day, and I average about $250 a week on various writing sites. The most important thing when it comes to writing sites is to make sure that you are proof reading what you are turning in. Correcting small mistakes can assist in bringing in more money for your articles. Also both Helium as well as Associated Content do have up front payments which helps a lot.
Finally there are search engine sites out there that you can sign up for that will pay you for helping people search. Sites such as ChaCha, and kgb will pay you for helping customers search. ChaCha pays .20 for every search you perform, and kgb will pay .10. I can usually get an extra $200 or so per week on these sites.
So I'm averaging about $575 per week working from home. These are things that I can do in my spare time, and it still allows me to go to school full time. If someone was able to commit full time to these earning avenues I'm sure that they could at least double what I am making.
There are legitimate sites out there that will allow you to earn money online. We all run into a few scams along the way, but don't give up ,keep searching, and you will find what your looking for. Do a little research, and ask people who are actually making a living online. Most of us would be happy to help.

I write this article by speaking from experience; over the past several years I have participated in many online survey web sites that start by giving you a certain amount of money for signing up and then pay you for each completed survey. The problem with many of these sites is that you have to take a small survey to see if you even qualify to take the real survey, and this can waste about 5 minutes of your time just to see if you can take the actual survey.
By the time you actually are allowed to take the real survey, you can find the real surveys take between 30 and 45 minutes for some of them and at best pay you between one and three dollars for each survey you take. Manypay 50 cents on average for a fifteen minute survey.
If you consider this, then you can actually make money taking online surveys, but you will average about one to two dollars per hour at best and you will qualify for less and less surveys the more you take, as many of them require that you haven't taken previous surveys in the same category for three months or more.
This makes it highly unlikely you will make enough money to pay anything but the lowest bill that costs around thirty dollars per month or less from taking surveys online. There are much better ways to make money online that can earn you around three dollars an hour that are much more rewarding than taking surveys.
That said, there are a few rare sites that offer really good surveys and give better rewards, some give you credits and you can exchange these for free gifts. I have received some free, used BlockBuster DVDs for taking surveys, so instead of cash I might have gotten fifteen dollars worth of free movies in one month.
But these online survey sites are rare and hard to find and sign up for at best; most of the survey sites are scams that require a survey only to lead you to try and purchase a product in the end. My advice is to save your time and invest in another online pursuit, there are other ways to make money with the Internet at home that have a better payout ratio for your time spent.
Some sites that pay you for reading and clicking on email links also pay so little that it takes months to merely earn a few dollars, from my own experience trying to find a way to make money online, bloggingis still the best way to earn a small side income online; and you can do it with less hours and a better payout than surveys or clicking on emails online.
