The method of electing our President of the United States cannot be changed, for it is written into the fiber of the Constitution by which our nation was begun. The only ones who find the current election process objectionable are those who espouse liberal thinking, wanting things like 'packing the vote' and 'hanging chads' such as was the case in the election of 2000.
Liberals get upset when the Republic of the United States of America works as it should; it's some of the reasons why they want to get felons and criminals, and more recently illegal aliens to vote in our elections.
The Electoral College isn't perfect, but there are systems behind that which allow for decision to be made. I have seen other articles which claim that the percentages of the population versus the percentage of representation are not matched, but then again, a census is taken only once every ten years, so the prospect of being equal to the numbers in 2000 versus 2007 are unlikely.
First of all, there is a misconception as to the type of government we have. There was a conversation between a Mrs. Powell, and Benjamin Franklin as he left the Independence Hall. She asked him, "What do we have - a republic or a monarchy?" Benjamin Franklin replied, "A republic, if you can keep it." -1
Consider then, the distrust amongst the Founders for the likes of monarchy, which ruled them with impunity, and republics past (Rome, Greece) that had come disheveled over the slightest disagreements. The Founders then designed a way that the votes be counted, so as to appease the electorate (the citizens), and ultimately use the Electoral College as a means of confirmation of the vote tally of the citizens. This, they believed, was a check upon the people, not to suppress them as a democracy in the truest form would, but to prevent usurpations by lynchings and other such means merely by the dissatisfaction of the results of dutifully electing Representatives, Senators, and ultimately, The President of the United States.
Over the two centuries plus since our Constitution was enacted, there have been attempts to subvert the republic with rebellion, (Shay's Rebellion, the resignation of most of John Tyler's Cabinet), and war, (the War Between The States, known as the Civil War), and by the institution of government as benefactor (implementation of Social Security, the New Deal, entitlements, "packing" the Supreme Court, as FDR did).
But the republic has remained, despite the advent of socialism within government. It will remain strong as long as we do three things: continue to keep voting, defend this country and its ideals with our lives, and pledge to one another as citizens of this great country, our Lives, our Fortunes, and Our Sacred Honor.

One man, one vote, a principle not adhered to in the accumulation of votes for the President of these United States of America. The electoral college in the beginning, assured the states with a small population at having at least three bargaining chips in the National race for the Presidency. And in the eighteenth century pride and power was paramount, to bring together a consensus among the original thirteen colonies for a union.
The peoples laptops receive signals from the Internet at cyber speed today with interesting and maybe truthful knowledge of the candidates. We do not rely on horse speed and word of mouth to associate with candidates. The last states to join the union Alaska and Hawaii needed no arm twisting to become part of the union.
And only one state New Hampshire and a half state, upper peninsula of Michigan have hinted their intentions of leaving the union.
Everything done in Washington has the same pit fall, they do not want to undue anything least the whole phony house of corruption and the jingle in their pockets collapse. Take the 1898 war with Spain tax on telephone calls,(ended in 1900) it took ten decades for the bureaucracy to allow it to be removed, and their audacity of giving back to the American Taxpayers only three years of funds, over a hundred years after the tax law expired. "(Sheeple wake up they are taken you to the cleaners and you are even paying for the cleaning.)" Emphisis mine
The electoral college monopoly always assures the Democrats or Republican parties the Presidency. This albatross around the governeds neck will never change and rid us of this antiquated relic. It has been over two hundred years since the people have had a Constitutional Convention in which to update and revise the Constitution. And the Bureaucrats and Elitists that really run the government, do not want and would not stand for a convention to let loose of the purse strings of the biggest Mafia family in the world. "(Follow the money and you will find the answer, too many pieces of silver paid to the Judases.)"
Until the people stand up and the Sheeple wake up and then stand up. We will be shackled with the same bureaucratic hobedygoop, poppy cock and bullpucky and rest assured they will not tolerate change, it would send the bureaucrats into the abyss of living like the people they are suppose to, but choose not to represent.
