I applaud Bob Barker on a job well done as host of one of the longest running game shows in television history. The Price is Right is as American as apple pie! Although he wasn't the first host, I believe he was the most popular with the fans of the show. I dare say he must have been a handsome young man because his dashing good looks held up well over the years. However, as with all good things, the time was right for him to move on to a well deserved retirement.

When Bob Barker's retirement was announced, there was some buzz about who would take over as host. Who would be good enough? Who would be able to capture the charisma that Bob had so duly contributed for so many years. It wouldn't be easy to find that right fit.

And now, without further ado, let's bring on Drew Carey! Who ever it was that decided on Drew must have had a vision, because he not only fits the bill perfectly, but also has exceeded all expectations.

Drew has made the transition smoothly with little change to the format of the show and with the utmost respect to Bob Barker. I had read a statement that Drew had said upon accepting the new job, and a line that stuck in my mind from that statement is, "You can't replace Bob Barker. I don't compare myself to anybody." He obviously realized that this hosting job was not just any ordinary hosting job. He was taking over a legendary spot along with many of Bob's loyal fans, so he had to make sure he didn't smugly step on anyone's toes. This was very diplomatic, politically correct and a gracious way to start. Drew has taken command of his new role and is making it his own.

The fans continue to line up for hours in advance to be in the audience, watch the taping and ultimately, hope to be picked as a contestant who could win the big showcase of prizes. And yes, I was one of those fans who made it up to CBS studios and stood in a crazy long line, wanting to see what it was like to watch a television show being made. I was surprised to see so many groups of young people sporting a variety of bright colored t-shirts, with a smattering of clever witticisms like, "Bob Who?", or "Drew's Crew", "Crazy for Carey", and so many more. Coincidently, most of those that were called up to the bidders' stands had t-shirts on! Was it a coincidence? Nevertheless, it is amazing to me that such an elementary concept of guessing the costs of commonly known products remains one of the top rated television shows for over 50 years!

Another amazing phenomenon is that this show appeals to all ages! To make my point, I am amazed that my teenage grandson loves the show and watches it when he doesn't have school. And yet, I can remember years ago when my mother watched the show faithfully when I was a kid! It just goes to show you that the basic premise of guessing prices and playing simple games grasps the attention of all ages. You don't have to be an expert or professional shopper; this is a game anyone can play!

I believe Drew will take the show to new heights. He is winning over the old fans, some of Bob's loyal fans, along with his own audience that are watching because they love Drew. He continues to draw new generations of viewers because of who he is. He has accomplished what some thought could not be done. The Price is Right now belongs to Drew.

The Price is Right is a game show that has reached legendary status. After 35 years with Bob Barker as its host, the show should be laid to rest with his retirement.

Everyone who has even heard of the show associates it with Bob Barker. Bringing in a new host at this point would have a dramatic impact on the show. People do not really watch the show because it is the best show on television in that time slot. They continue to watch after all these years because of Barker. A new host will bring a slew of problems, the least of which are the ratings obstacles producers will face as watchers acclimate themselves to a new host after all these years.

The two top contenders for the job, Rosie O'Donnell and John O'Hurley, bring with them their own problems as well. After a shortened stint on the television talk show, The View, Rosie is vying for the top slot on the game show circuit. By her own admission she would not be willing to sign a long term contract at this point in time. Although she may bring some excitement to the show, producers need someone who will be in it for the long haul after having 35 years of continuity with Barker. John O'Hurley, on the other hand, is about as exciting to watch as paint drying. After a few years of watching him host the Family Feud, watchers of that show may be glad to see him go.

The bottom line is that an icon can never be replaced. Bob Barker is a legend. If producers replace him, the show may go on but it will be a shadow of its former self. It will never be at the same level that it is now. It is better to go out on top than to wear out your welcome.
