Superman

Spiderman is Superboy! Check your old time comic books. Peter Parker is a teen working for a newspaper. The newspaper editor is a gruff guy. That's Clark Kent and the Daily Planet story. Stan Lee took Superboy and gave him Superman's job. Parker has a love and he can't tell her his true identity. That's Clark and Lois. Once you understand that Spiderman is just a knock off of Superboy, the only argument left is which is better, Krypton or bugs?

Krypton is ice or green shards or slick linoleum.

Bugs have antenae and lots of legs and spray juice out of their tushes.

Both of them are pretty humorless.

Does Spiderman have an edge in terms of plot opportunities? At Marvel, yes. Stan Lee seems to have created stories that should have had a definite conclusion. Time should pass. Peter Parker should be growing up. All the Fantastic people should be dealing with their new lives or not. The X - Men... forget that stupid ass premise. But because Spiderman was created to make money, every ten years or so, Marvel destroys its own history and creates the tale all over again. That's not passing the torch. That's denying there was ever a torch before this day. At DC, this rehashing would flounder. Their readers tend to stick around beyond their seventeenth birthday so they expect the characters to go somewhere.

Superman is the better story. He's alien so he can live forever if you want. The villians can change but he can keep going. He can establish himself as an icon for the whole, imaginary universe. I knew Superman was the better story when I read the entire, Doomsday saga DC ran in the early 1990's. At the climax, Superman returned but as a regular guy with no powers except the ability to grow his hair like a mane. But without the abilities beyond a normal man, he was flinging himself into battles with enemies that could, literally, alter planets. The other characters around him at the time knew they were watching Superman even without the powers. Superman is the selfless, eternal pawn for humanity. Peter Parker is a teenager. He's a teenager who isn't allowed to grow up because of his makers. He's the pilfered copy of Superman. There's no point in comparing them.

Spiderman

Spider-man is a tragic hero. Spider-man starts his life as Peter Parker who grows up with out friends and yet he is highly intelligent before the accident that creates his alter ego. Sounds like any number of children. Is it any wonder that the Golden Age of comic books belongs to Marvel. Superman on the other hand is an alien that appears to grows up lonely because he cant display all the marvelous powers that he has for fear of putting his adopted parents in danger. I say appears because Superboy spends much of his youth in the future where he is befriended by the Legion of Superhero's while spider-man grows up lonely and alone except for his aunt and uncle superman does not.

Spider-man never knew his parents they died before he was born. Superman's parents on the other hand died when Krypton was destroyed. This may sound like similar life experience until one realizes that Superman did meet his parents and got to know them quite well. He did this once again by traveling in time. So while Spider-man never knew his parents and could not ever know his parents Superman not only knew his parents but was able to get to know them in a way that spider-man never could.

Spider-man has many weaknesses when compared to Superman while Superman only has only one, Kryptonite. Admittedly Kryptonite is a big weakness since it comes in a variety of colors and has a variety of effects Spider-man has many weaknesses not only is spiderman susceptible to uranium, plutonium, and any other deadly radioactive substance he is not invulnerable and he is not capable of living in an airless environment. Spider-man has all the normal human frailties if cut he bleeds, if hit it hurts, if hit with a bolt of lightning he dies.

Lets take a moment to look at Supermans main villain Lex Luthor. While not the villain that eventually kills Superman Lex Luthor has been able on a number of occasions to get the better of the man of steel. Lex Luthor is a mere human with no powers whatsoever. He uses his intellectual prowess to put Superman in a bind over and over again. I would say that Spider-man is at least a brilliant as Lex Luthor.
Now lets look at the most impressive battle that Spider-man ever had to fight the X-men. In Secret Wars Spider-man fights the X-men and is smart enough to know that he has to take Xavier out of the equation first or loose as he eventually does. Despite the combined powers of Xaviers students Spider-man not only holds his own but actually starts to win before Professor X takes a hold of his mind and makes him forget. Spider-man took on the X-men? and almost won? Cyclops with his optic blasts, Wolverine with his admantium skeleton, heightened senses, and mutant healing factor, Storm with her ability to control the weather, and lets not forget Rogue who had permanently absorbed the powers of Ms. Marvel making her as invincible as superman, with the ability to fly and with the added power of being able to take Spider-mans power if she could ever touch him as she proved when she fought Thor, capt America, and many other Avengers as a member of Magnetos brotherhood of evil mutants. Any one who thinks that Superman would win in a fight with Spider-man hands down has severely underestimated the friendly neighborhood wall crawler.

In conclusion it is easy to be a hero when you have nothing to fear, but true character is shown when it hurts to do the right thing. It is easy to do the right thing when you have nothing to loose, but true character is shown when you have everything to loose and still do the right thing. While no one would imagine that Superman is not worthy of praise for all he has done for the sake of humanity, Spider-man, the geek who grew up with out friends, The man who never knew his parents, the hero who risks everything every day for people who spit in his face and does it consistently because it is the right thing to do is the superior hero.
