It's close.
Venom is better as a pure soldier: a man on a mission, ruthless, focused, powerful, and unconcerned about externalities. He's like an unstable Wolverine. I consider all talk about Spiderman's emotional intelligence and well-rounded personality as an asset just dumb. This isn't a college debate, it's a one-on-one fight, and a fighter has a better perspective on this than a communications professor.
But Spiderman has the ability to not die. No matter how cunning and ruthless any villain has been, and every one of his enemies has been, he is supremely resilient and doesn't take the beating forever. And it's all about those externalities. See, when Venom is intent on destruction and Spiderman is worrying about his surroundings, Spiderman also sees that construction area, or that sound emitter thingy over there. Spiderman would win because the fight wouldn't happen on a beach or wherever, IT WOULD ALWAYS MOVE TO AN AREA WHERE SPIDEY CAN USE HIS SURROUNDINGS. Such is the way Spidey has defeated every villain he comes in contact with, he is the ultimate villain-baiter.
Also, Venom is like an animal and is let into these situations again and again. Like the bull in a bullfight: the matador shakes the cape and he charges but somehow misses, and although he realizes his mistake, he keeps falling for it and getting more frustrated.
So if you put the two Spiders in a jar and shake it so they fight, maybe Venom. But Spiderman is just too resourceful and long-lasting to lose to a big baby like Venom.

It is not necessarily an age old question, but it is fun to ponder, nonetheless. Who would win the fight, Spider-man or Venom. No disrespect to the Spider, but Venom wins, hands down.
Why? You ask? After all, Spider-man is smarter. He definitely has more fighting experience than Venom. But by his very nature, Venom is able to exploit a weakness that Spider-man cannot easily overcome.
For those of you who do not know, Venom is powered by a symbiote. This symbiote was acquired by Spider-man during the Secret Wars as a result of Spidey losing his costume in a fight. He originally thought that it was an artificially designed costume. He was wrong.
The symbiote began to try to permanently bond with Spider-man. Upon this discovery, and due to the fact that symbiote brought about negative emotions in its host, Spider-man rejected it. This caused the symbiote to find another host in Eddie Brock, who hated Peter Parker. Joining together they became Venom.
Still wondering why I think Venom wins? Because of the time spent with Spider-man as its host, the symbiote was able to ascertain one of Spider-man's greatest strengths: his spider sense. Now, bonded to Brock, the Venom symbiote alien is able to overcome, and even come in under the one thing Spidey values to protect him above all else.
Have they fought before in the past? Absolutely! And Venom has always had the upper hand. The only reason Venom has not seriously defeated Spider-man is simply this: At heart, Eddie Brock is not all bad. Most battles have been ended with Spider-man convincing the Brock side of Venom to stop fighting by appealing to his better nature.
If Eddie had ever taken a serious turn at killing Spider-man, instead of toying with him first, this debate would be finished. All it would take would be a fatal sneak attack, and it would be all over.
I am not suggesting I like this. And I hate that it is true. But the fact remains. The only thing saving Spider-man from certain demise is not depending upon Parker's abilities at all. It is the mercy of Eddie Brock, and nothing else.
