I live in Victoria, Australia where it is against the law to use a cell phone whilst driving. I totally agree with the law and am happy to see more and more people who are actually obeying it and pulling over to the side of the road to take or make calls.
Why do I so wholeheartedly agree? Because one of my friends was using her phone on a car trip with her mum. She lost concentration on the road for about 10 seconds, drove off the road and into a ditch, flipping the car. Her mum was thrown from the vehicle and pinned under it dying almost immediately.
My friend has had to deal with the senseless death of her mum at such a young age (my friend was only 20 at the time, her mum was 41) all the while blaming herself and being blamed by family members. Just because she took a call on her phone whilst she was driving. She was only bruised and scratched on the outside, but on the inside she has been severely scarred, suffering nightmares and depression.
My friend has just had her first baby and is now 25 and still struggling with the memories of that day and living without her mum. Her mum will never see her new grandchild, all because of a 10 second lapse in concentration. A decision to take a phone call that probably wasn't that important anyway.
The amount of people who I still see driving along and talking on their phones, swerving to the wrong side of the road or off the road completely makes me sick. Yet they still keep talking! In the wrong hands your car and your phone can become weapons - that's why we need a license to drive!
So in the meantime even if cellphones aren't banned while driving yet, if the call is really that important to you pull over and take it. Otherwise make use of your voice mail and take the call later. It could save your life, the life of someone you love or even the life of a stranger.

Five minutes of driving your car towards office, if an accident occurred to your only daughter at home I think it would be better to hear about it immediately and take her to hospital. Rather than receiving call at office because cell phone usage is banned while driving. Numerous kind of problem may prevail if we are banned from using our cell phone while driving. Perhaps it would be better if a law is implemented to use headphones rather than banning it completely.
With the technological development let's hope the world would provide better version which may pose less threat. May be a cell phone can be embedded into the car's stereo system becoming active with the stroke of the car's engine. The world has taken a giant leap reducing the use of fixed phone. A reason can be that it is a fastest way of communication working as a mass media. In previous day's, one have to keep message if not available on the fixed phone trying again and again making it cumbersome. Now, in an instant it's easy to contact anyone at anytime breaking the boundary of place and distance.
From personal reason to business market, cell phones have reduced the stress in every individual by a good percentage. Banning cell phone usage while driving will create lots drawbacks relating to loss of efficiency and time. And since everyone is accustomed in using cell phones specially while driving for saving time at office may point out as better advantage. Nevertheless as stated above, it is of great importance to enforce rules for using headphones connected to cell phone while driving.
The reason for this discussion may be as it can be connected to increase in road accidents but it is not always the case. From the invention of automobiles, road mishap is always seen by everyone even dating back to times when cell phone was not invented. Keeping in view the consequences of frequent accident related to reckless driving, drinking, narrow roads and failure of vehicle engines. It is not evident for prohibiting use of cell phone while driving as it may lead to various unwanted consequences which may be expensive.
There were times when people haven't used cell phones but still carried on with their life. Perhaps it will be good to point out the pace with which the world is moving forward in this day. Cell phone usage makes it efficient in keeping connected with family members and at office as some of the deals or problems are solved instantaneously just because of possessing a cell phone. Therefore it is very much important to see the pros and cons of using cell phones while driving without simply looking from one aspect.
