The Food and Drug Administration, a government agency, has already taken a stand when they required that the presence of trans fats must be stated on food labels. Scientific evidence and statistics have pointed to trans fats being responsible for the rise in heart disease since the second world war when hydrogenation was first used in food processing. The facts are there; trans fats are not healthy. This should be obvious to anyone who cares to read and do the research.
Should they be banned? Yes, I believe they should be banned. Please notice the name of the government agency named above; Food and Drug Administration. We depend on our government to regulate our prescription medications and our food supply already. Many unsuspecting consumers with limited funds, perhaps even government issued food stamps with which to purchase their daily bread, buy products that are slowly killing them. The government subsidizes our food producers, then issue food stamps to citizens for purchasing this food and in effect are participating in the the process of causing disease and the early death of its citizens. Then they subsidize the medical care for these citizens with federally funded insurance. Taxes pay for all of this!
It is not a "big brother" telling us what to do or not to do situation. It is a matter of economics and accountability within the food producing industry. It is plain common sense to stop paying our food industry to make people sick and then turn around and pay the medical establishment to fix them.

"Calling Big Brother." Are we a democracy or a communist country? Please, what's next? Will the government tell us whom we can marry according to social class? Do we want to be giving children up for adoption because we had more than the government told us we could have? The more we let the government control out decisions for us, the closer we move towards communism.
Common sense should tell anyone that all fats-including trans fats-are bad for you in excess. Donuts are bad for us too, but do we really want the government shutting down all the Krispy Kreams? I doubt it. Or better yet do we want to ban chocolate? I think that would cause the next prohibition.
I feel that restaurants have the responsibility of telling us what is in the foods they serve, but we have the responsibility to decide whether or not we put it in our mouths. Staying healthy is not easy in this day in age. We have fast food restaurants tempting us on every corner and good food commercials consuming the television but most of us either choose to give in or not. On the flip side, most of these places have a healthy menu and there is a weight watcher commercial following every food commercial.
Here in America we are given options and choices. If we make the wrong choice, we have to answer for it and that's the part no one seems to want to do. The more we blame the government for things like obesity, cancer and our own unhappiness, the more they are going to take control, giving us fewer and fewer rights. If we allow bans on things that are not popular (and in this case healthy) then we loose our individualism and we turn into robots. The whole idea upon founding America was to give us the freedom to choose and slowly but surely we are giving that freedom away because we don't seem to have enough self control hold ourselves responsible. Think long and hard before we talk about government bans. Just because we like the idea of the ban in question, does not mean we are going to be happy with every one that is imposed. I say no to the ban on trans fat. I don't want to have to give up chocolate, coffee and coke later on down the road.
