Reality TV has been fixed from the start; it is the best way to bring in ratings. Every show has some form of drama involved, and if the dialog was not fixed then the producers of the show would have to worry about quiet and dull moments that would drop ratings. The audience's fixation with drama is what fuels these shows to ramp up the drama from show to show, so as to keep viewers tuning in. I'm not a fan of reality TV at all, but it is a business and knowing that a large portion of viewer's are drawn to the yelling and screaming, the fist fights and dramatic, soap opera storylines, they're doing what it takes to make money.
Flavor of Love, Rock of Love, Bad Girls Club, the Kardashians, just a few of the over-dramatic shows I can think of off hand, and because of the high ratings all these shows stayed on the air much longer then they probably should have. Some reality shows do serve a purpose, like Teen Mom that shows young girls and boys the consequences of having babies when you are not ready to take care of them. Another one is True Life that showcases many different aspect's of life through the eyes of many different types of people. There are a hand full of other very good shows out there but everything's about the money, and the producers have their hands all over these shows to make sure it's of the quality that's excepted and drooled over by the audience.
Personally I didn't think reality shows would last as long as they have, but as long as viewers keep tuning in at alarming rates, these shows will continue to be aired, and continue to be modified to the point where there's enough drama to keep you coming back for more. Many careers have been started from these reality shows, and whether you feel they have talent or not, whether you feel they are deserving of all the attention their getting, these individuals are taking advantage of the opportunity giving to become celebrities without having to be blessed with major talent in a specific area except being dramatic, and I cant be mad at them for that when it's the viewers who keep these shows going. It's a new era of television and as long as, we as a whole, keep tuning in, these shows are going nowhere no matter how fixed they really are.
