This is a article which is hard for me to write, because, I am against plastic surgery in general. However, I do see why people are interested in them, and why people want to have them. The main reason I am against them, is because I believe in natural beauty, and because media, close to, force people to have plastic surgery to be acceptable in our modern day society. That is not right. Nobody should feel that they are pushed to do something, let alone something so extreme as to change your physical appearance.

The topic of "should teens be allowed to have plastic surgery", for me, all boils down to your culture, and most importantly: freedom. In our 'modern-day society' the general idea of cosmetic surgery is an accepted one. They don't seem to see anything ethically wrong with it. At least not when an middle aged person wants to do it. Where people are having problem is when the teenagers want to go 'under the knife'. Why is that? Why is it socially acceptable for a 40 year old to change her physical appearance, but not an 17 year old? The answer to that question is simple: adults feel that as under-age, we can not make reasonable decisions about our own life, and thus, they feel the need to control it. A 17 year old can make just as reasonable an decision that a 40 year old can. So where is the problem?

After reading a few of the responses on the 'No-side' it seems that they believe the surgery does nothing but boosts the self esteem of the person. Something which can, and should be boosted in another, less extreme way. I agree with this. One should not need to go 'under the knife' to feel beautiful, or even acceptable in today's society. However, this discussion is not about the effects of cosmetic surgery, and it's effect in media, rather it is about if teens should be allowed to...

We live in a free society, and I believe people should be allowed to express themselves in any way they want to. Yes, teenagers SHOULD be allowed to have the decision to have cosmetic surgery. However, they should be taught other alternatives first, and be encouraged to stay away from the artificial choice. The peer pressure must stop, and we should be teaching other, more natural alternatives.

Teenagers and Plastic Surgery

There are many things to be taken into consideration when considering plastic surgery.  Since the most popular forms of plastic surgery at the time is altering one’s body to improve your looks the idea of allowing a teenager to make that decision is absurd.

At this young and impressionable age teenagers are often led by peer pressure and will make decisions today that can and will change their views about themselves in years to come.  A plastic surgery is not something you can return when you realize it may not be what your really want after all.  This is not to say that adults do not make the same mistakes and often regret making permanent changes to their body.

For this reason and many others many Plastic Surgeons will have you undergo a counseling appointment to make sure that you are in the correct frame of mind, this will protect the Doctor as well as your mental state in the future.  Plastic Surgery still carries the same risks as any other surgery which is risk of infection and poor scaring.  The young body of teenager has also has not finished its growing cycle and this can lead to less desired results as you age and finish growing.

There are some situations where plastic surgery can be acceptable for a teenager.  This type of plastic surgery is usually based on reconstruction from damage from an accident or to repair the skin and tissue from burns. And the growth cycle of the human body and the age of the teenager are vital in making the proper decision. In some cases these types of injuries or damage can change the expected growth rate of skin cells and bone growth, making these decisions much more vital for long term consideration.

There are also cases where some young woman have very large breast that can cause back problems and skin issues.  When the breast is laying on the skin and it is wet most of the time there can be risk of  a skin mold growth or yeast infections in that area.  This is can be very difficult for a young adult or teen to manage.  The problem again is that if the surgery for reduction is undergone at an early age and the body continues to grow there is risk of needing a follow up surgery to further reduce the risk of these problems.

Many teens may find that surgery to improve their looks is the easy answer to creating a better life for them.  Unfortunately they have a hard time foreseeing the problems that can result in later years.  This can include a life time of varies surgeries for upkeep of the initial surgery.  What is even more alarming is the idea of creating a young person that has become addicted plastic surgery and needs to continue to alter themselves in order to feel good about how they look.
