The way South Park depicted Nascar fans as poor and stupid is completely absurd and ignorant. I am a Nascar fan and I'm middle class and also a college student. South Park did this because of the people that act stupid at Nascar races are the only ones that the media displays on TV such as the drunks that threw the beers cans on the track at Talladega. It gives a wrong and negative opinion of Nascar fans. I seriously doubt that the majority of Nascar fans are stupid and I also know that the drivers are intelligent because many of them have college degrees and I've also heard on TV that Nascar driver Ryan Newman has some form of an engineering degree. Yes, the majority of the fans are from the South but Southern people have a negative stereotype against them that they are all stupid which is more than likely untrue. The income of Nascar fans is mainly Middle Class. Though the episode was strictly harmless fun, it was still a wrong depiction. They could of had something at the end of the episode explaining that you don't have to be poor and stupid, considering Cartman acted poor and stupid and wrecked the whole field and killed people. Nascar is growing in popularity and i guess people are all becoming poor and stupid then based on the criteria on South Park.(and if the economy keeps decling, the poor part might become a swift reality). So I'm sure that there are a lot of poor and stupid people that watch the sport but that could be the case with all sports. Also it is ignorant to think that poor people are stupid and that stupid people are poor. There are a lot of stupid rich people, not going to name any names but you get the idea. Some aspects of the episode were funny such as the part at the press conference where Cartman was talking like an idiot and interrupting the other drivers. We Nascar fans do not take lightly to being called poor and stupid, because we aren't. Yes, we can take a joke (well most of us) but it hurts our feelings when the whole nation besides ourselves thinks we are all poor and stupid (which I'm sure is not the case). So next time you watch that episode just remember that it is all in good fun and that Nascar fans are usually good, smart, Middle Class Americans that deserve the respect that most of us give to the rest of the United States citizens.
