Do you like quality or want something for cheap? That is the true question being asked here. If you put aside the fact that females drool over Nikon's mascot, Ashton Kutcher, most people will agree that Canon cameras provide you the best quality for the money. Just recently going through the purchase of my first DSLR, I am one hundred percent sold on Canon. I looked at several websites that did side by side comparisons of photographs with the same lenses of the same content. When the images were small, they both looked crisp and there was no winner to be had. Of course you have to consider packing thirteen to fifteen megapixel in a tiny image will of course look great. The photo journals blew up the images so you could compare each photograph. Shot for shot, there was much less shadowing and bleeding of colors when you looked deep into the images from a Canon camera.

The main reason you get more bang from a Canon is because of their design process. Canon has a reputation for drifting tested technology from their high end models down to their lower end models. At the same time, that is the reason you pay more when you want to purchase a Canon over a Nikon. For example, the new Canon Rebel T2i has a large portion of features straight from the high end Canon EOS 7D including the large eighteen megapixel sensor.

One of Canon's features that they excel in is video. Although the thought of a DSLR with video capability seems funny, it has enticed many users including myself to go with Canon. It sure beats carrying a camera and video camcorder everywhere you go, when the picture you were about to take turns into a high definition short film. Canon's technology leads the way on DSLR videography. Although not perfect, Canon camera's tout the highest resolution and fastest frames per second over any Nikon model of a similar price point.

Another comparison is the make of the camera. When shopping for a new camera, I had to get my hands on every model that I would potentially buy. The Canon camera almost molded to my hand. It was like the designers knew I was going to be holding their camera for hours on end. When attempting to fiddle with the Nikon, the model felt cheap and I didn't hold it for too long in fear that I was going to break it. The other difference in builds is a matter of preference. A Canon's base will be very light because they extracted many of the features and require the lenses to perform functions like auto-focus and image stabilization. Nikon's base takes care of this functionality, which allows you to buy several light weight lenses instead.

After my research into the two camera brands and a point for point comparison for all the things that most photographers need, there was only one brand that I would settle for: Canon.
