Capitalist

When it comes to Jesus and the politics of this world, we must always be careful to not confuse the Spiritual mind with the carnal mind. Just to be clear on this issue, the Scriptures are very emphatic as to the fact that Jesus is a Monarchy, saying that what Jesus says goes, because He is the King of Kings, and the Lord of Lords, period. However, when it comes to us who are living on this planet today, who truly love the Lord, and are under His Lordship, should we be more comfortable with capitalism, or should we subscribe more to the socialist ideals?

To answer this question correctly we need to see what the Scriptures point out to us on this issue, and go from there to make up our own minds as to why capitalism is probably the more sure way to go as far as our Lord Jesus is concerned, and why.

In the book of the Revelation we hear an interesting statement coming from His Saints, and it is found in Revelation 1:5-6 and it reads …” And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, and hath made us kings and–priests- unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen “... What is very interesting is the word that follows kings, and that would be the word “priests. If Jesus only made us Kings, then yes, socialism would apply, but the stopper of this issue is the word priest, and the logic behind the need to be a priest is the very reason capitalism is more apt to succeed than socialism.

We who seek after Godly wisdom turn to the book of Proverbs, and here we see the many councils of the Holy Spirit about the practicality of human behavior, and the do’s and don’ts of the advice given. For example we can go to Proverbs 5:15-17 and read …” Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well. Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets. Let them be only thine own, and not strangers' with thee “...

Another example we can look at would be in the following chapter in Proverbs 6:6-11 and it reads, …” Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest. How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man “... In these councils alone we can begin to understand that the wise man is different from the fool just as much as a thrifty man is different than a sluggard. The reasoning behind this advise is that a King is responsible to God for those that are put in his charge, and a Priest is responsible to God for the shortcomings of those that are in need.

We must also consider Christ in the light of the New Testament and hear what was said by the Apostle Paul on this issue, and we find it in the book of Ephesians 4:28 and it reads, …” Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth “... Socialism completely takes away this change of a thieving heart to a giver to the needy by simply forcing everyone who pays taxes to give to those who are in need, no matter if it is coming from a thief or a righteous man. Maybe this is the reason more and more righteous people go off to foreign lands in order to be able to practice the true charity that the Scriptures points us to, and avoid this godless charity through taxation that the liberal minds are so in love with today.

To conclude this issue, we need to turn to the book of Proverbs once again and hear the reasoning behind what it means to be a King, and also why it is so important to couple it with being a Priest also. We find this reasoning in Proverbs 29:2-7 and it reads, …” When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn. Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father: but he that keepeth company with harlots spendeth his substance. The king by judgment establisheth the land: but he that receiveth gifts overthroweth it. A man that flattereth his neighbour spreadeth a net for his feet. In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare: but the righteous doth sing and rejoice. The righteous considereth the cause of the poor: but the wicked regardeth not to know it “... What we read here is that Jesus make the righteous to be kings so that the people can rejoice in the justice the righteous King establishes in the land, because the righteous will always consider the cause of the poor.

The Priest intercedes for the people who are under the rule of the wicked, and pray against the bribes that are being taken instead of true justice. A Priest will intercede for that unsuspecting neighbor whose feet are about to be caught up in the wicked souls’ net. The King and Priest that Jesus makes strengthens the King’s abilities to do more in his or her communities, and at the same time intercedes for the poor and needy because the Lord and His Kings and Priests know the cause of poverty. This is the real reason capitalism is the only real solution to the human situation today.

Socialism will fail because of the fact that those individuals that spend their time with harlots, no matter how much you give them, will spend their substance. Capitalism agrees with the Scripture’s advise when it says you can be as rich as you want to be (the ant), or you can spend all your substance if you want to (the sluggard), but at least the choice is ours to make, but socialism on the other hand disregards the fact that the Scriptures plainly teach that he or she that receives “gifts” overthrows the nation.

Socialist

"Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys." Luke 12:33

"Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." Luke 18:25

I don't really want to fill the whole article with quotes that support the argument but it would be easy to. As another writer has said, Jesus does not subscribe to manmade systems, and the socialist theory denies God, but in principal I believe Jesus would certainly swing more towards Socialist ideals than he would towards Capitalist.

One of teachings of Christ was to follow him and later on in the letters we are told to be Christ like. If we look at the like that Jesus led we can see that he did not lead a money focussed life, money was regularly talked about as getting in the way. Jesus was also a bible scholar and would have known all about the year of the jubilee where debts were forgiven to prevent the poor from suffering and it also prevented dispossession essentially a very ‘Socialist’ idea.. Jesus would have not only known about this but would have agreed with it heartily!

Jesus had no home, no bed to lie his head, few possessions, he relied on the kindness of others, he trusted completely in God to be his provider. Some might argue ‘this does not mean that he was against capitalism’, but he actively spoke out against the rich Luke 12:33 and the story of the rich young ruler shows us that Jesus did not want money to be in the way of people following his teachings.

I do not want to talk about the love of money being the cause of all kinds of evil because capitalism is not necessarily the love of money. Money does, however, divide people, create elitism and promote greed, but much good can come out of earning money, surely though Jesus wants us to share this wealth with those less fortunate than ourselves. I believe that for so long Capitalism has been associated with Christianity and Socialism that people have dismissed the truth in favour of tradition. This debate is jut that it is about truth and seeing what the bible tells us, even if it makes us uncomfortable.

Have you sold all your possessions to follow Jesus?
