It is peculiar the number of people, many who are Christians, believe in God, believe in Jesus, might even believe in Angels, yet refuse to believe that Satan (the Devil) exists as a physical presence. Some believe that Satan is a metaphor for all evil, the embodiment of all things dark, but is not a physical presence capable of orchestrating chaos, ruin and death. Others believe that Satan is merely the absence of God, that when good and light are lacking, evil and darkness persist; for example, when one turns out the light, it is simply dark. Some theories purport that the Devil is a made up character, created by Churches and religious leaders to scare their followers into staying on the “right path”. Many paintings depict the image of Satan as a red cartoon character with horns and a pitchfork or images of a conjured up monster from the artist’s imaginings; however, the Bible gives us a better understanding of his true nature.

Scripture tells us that Satan was an angel, a physical creature, who rebelled against God. These physical angels are seen in the spiritual realm, God’s realm, like we see each other in the natural realm. Angels, unlike humans, do not need faith because they exist in God’s realm, the realm that we, as humans, cannot see with our eyes and, therefore, need faith for. Many scriptures warn that those who have access to God (either in His realm or by faith) will suffer a harsher penalty if they deliberately choose to turn from God than those who never knew Him in the first place. Satan was aware of this and during his insurrection against God managed to convert other angels into following him and turning away from God. God cast them all out of Heaven and flung them down to Earth. Similarly, he cast Adam and Eve down to Earth for the same reason. So here we are, all together, trying to get along.

But there is no “getting along” with Satan. Scripture tells us many times of his lying nature. “Just bow to me once and I will give you all of this”, he said to Jesus to tempt Him in the wilderness. Of course, Jesus knew that it wouldn’t be just once, as Satan’s nature doesn’t allow him to be content with one thing, he wants it all.

Satan is very real and doing quite well on planet Earth today. He’s had a lot of time to perfect his deception. The fact that articles are being written questioning his existence is a testament to his progress in modern society. It’s easy to believe in something when it’s standing in front of your face, but if it wanted to deceive you, operating in the shadows where doubt and unbelief are easily cultured would be imperative.

Although called by many names, Satan’s nature is consistent: he is a liar, a thief and a destroyer. He hates God, hates God’s creation (humans) and exists only to lie to us in order to steal our birthright (convince us to hate God and turn away from Him too).  Jesus says in John 10:10, “The thief comes only in order to steal, kill and destroy; I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows)”. There are numerous scriptures in the Holy Bible referencing Satan, his nature and Jesus’ dealings with him. Jesus certainly “believed” that Satan existed, it is arrogant for us assume we know any better. And the Church does us no favor by skimming over details of Satan’s nature, or not talking about him at all. In walking the delicate line of giving Satan too much power, many within the body of the Church have all but written him out of the equation. There is a complacent attitude in modern times that permeates Christianity. Many act as if God’s Words are simply guidelines that can be deliberately broken at will because God is all forgiving. While God is long suffering and tremendously merciful, willful disobedience to God’s Word does not go unpunished.  In holding this lackadaisical attitude, we tend to disregard Satan as the true enemy of God that he is. Scripture warns us that following anything other than God’s Word, is the equivalent of following Satan. Jesus said in Luke 11:35 “Make sure that the light you think you have is not actually darkness” and goes on to say to a group of people who would not believe in Him in John 8:44, “You are of your father, the devil, and it is your will to practice the lusts and gratify the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him.”

Anyone trying to “prove” Satan’s existence will most likely source the Bible; however, some compelling empirical evidence of Satan’s existence in the natural appears in “The Rite; The Making of a Modern Exorcist”, by Matt Baglio. The book is a compilation of true events that happened when a Catholic priest, Father Gary Thomas, was chosen to study the Rite of Exorcism through the Vatican. His accounts of daily exorcisms, under the guidance of seasoned exorcist Father Carmine, raise questions about the physical presence of Satan.

Exorcisms are performed regularly in Europe, in contrast to the United States, which rarely performs them. Scripture gives us several accounts where Jesus encountered demons and/or possessed people and dealt with them. Father Gary gives detailed accounts of numerous victims of demonic possession and their behavior during the Ritual of Exorcism. Somewhat skeptical when he went for the training, Father Gary experienced first hand what it was like to be in the presence of a demon, and it changed his outlook on the matter. One unfortunate nun, had been receiving the Ritual from Father Carmine for nine years, and the sessions were violent and exhausting. Others, during the Ritual, were reported to vomit enormous amounts of nails, needles, glass, semen and other objects, in quantities that would defy the natural capacity of a person’s body. Father Gary believed that the objects were somehow manifesting from the demonic person’s mouth, as no evidence of physical damage to bodily tissues was found after the session. One would presume that vomiting nails and glass would result in death due to internal bleeding, yet the victims would come back week after week for more sessions. Father Gary also witnessed physical contortions of the possessed, most notably, one victim whose facial muscles twisted into the shape of a snake’s head.

Father Gary states that during the Ritual, demons are commanded to reveal their names. Most of the time, the demon reveals itself as “Legion” or some other lesser demon name. Very rarely will a demon reveal itself as “Satan”, which suggests that demons may follow a hierarchy. Matthew 9:34 and 25:41 refer to this hierarchy.

It isn’t likely that anyone will definitively “prove” the existence of Satan anytime soon. Of the many lies that he tells, one of his biggest is to convince people that he doesn’t exist. As far as Satan being contrived by church leaders to keep their congregations in line, this might have worked for a little while, but lasting fellowship with God comes from positive life changes that happen when people follow His Word, not from fear.  There are many things within the Biblical realm that cannot easily be explained, it is likely Satan prefers to remain one of them because where there is light, darkness must leave. And mere mortals with the shining Light of God are dangerous enough to negate his existence.

"When good men die their goodness does not perish, but lives though they are gone. As for the bad, all that was theirs dies and is buried with them."                                  Euripides

Have you ever pondered the point that if there were no religion what the world and people’s attitudes would be like? Think about it for a few moments and then consider the following.

To know God we have to be taught it, we as children have to follow our parents into the unknown abyss every Sunday as well as that fellowship meeting or, annual committee meeting, Harvest Festival and all the rest of the hype that goes with religious sects and meetings.  This includes baptizing us into a religion that we probably do not want, admitted some followings have a dedication process where, when you’re old enough you can choose to stay or choose to do something else. However all religion is an indoctrination as is life through the medium we are raised.

Whatever it is you choose or find yourself doing, is a result of learning or being taught, not many people unfortunately step outside the box of given direction. The only distraction from the thought and practice you grow up in is that infernal devil Satan.  He gets preached to us more than any other doctrine throughout the world.  In fact he is in some cases the most revered thing in the Christian world, well you would think so by how much space he is given in sermons and articles.

It is this very reason that inspired me to write whilst viewing an article on the opposite of this theme and the person writing was so obsessed by the devil that he/she wrote an article in excess of three thousand words on how and why Satan torments. This so ups my anti in disbelief that a so called God fearing Christian can give so much creedence to Satan. I ask myself at times like this, “Who are people with this obsession giving the most thought to and respect if Satan is true?” What makes them so paranoid that their fear of satan overwhelms the love of God?

You know, it’s a funny thing how we can look back over history, with religions and mythology, even works by people such as Plato, Aristotle, and many others. Some works and texts are accepted without clarification and others need too much assurance.  The Bible for instance really does come under the scrutineer’s headlamp; being highlighted here and there, as if three words or more carry a whole generation of truth, if not a lifetime.  Then someone comes along and uses the same verse with the same amount of passion in the opposite. I shake my head in utter disbelief at these eventualities and cry, “What is truth Lord?”

I like the Bible and its many stories of wisdom and I see reason and sense in most of it, though some can be hard to decipher as they are in contradiction of one’s education.  One part I do like and it is in conjunction with this topic we are addressing is about Jesus and temptation. Firstly though, I would like to address something from the Old Testament.

Le 16:8 And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats; one lot for the LORD, and the other lot for the scapegoat.

Le 16:10 But the goat, on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat, shall be presented alive before the LORD, to make an atonement with him, and to let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness.

Oh! How mankind hates to take responsibility for his own errors in society and it is no more so today than was back in the days of the travelers through the wilderness.  What hope do we have today, so many thousands of years ahead with this sort of indoctrination built in to our genes, generation by generation at whatever religious gathering you choose?

We may laugh at the picture drawn by the words of yesteryear with the goat being run into the wilderness with a package of excuses tied to its back and probably became a free feed for a lonely nomad on the road to wherever. So why should we not laugh at the concept of Satan these days; is he not one and the same as the goat?  Does not modern day effigies and depiction of Satan’s head pattern that of a goat covered in blood? Is Satan nothing but a scapegoat for our excuses and lack of responsibility toward our own ability to be wrong? But wait, wasn’t satan a serpent? Please don’t get me wrong though I mock, I know the depiction of Satan is much bigger and deeper than this or is it?

I go back to the beginning of this article where I ask or say, “To know God we have to be taught it.” And where I ask think about it; did you?  If you did, what you will probably find is that you cannot determine a world without these concepts because you are part of the inauguration process of mankind and his distinctions on life limited by and through blinkered religious education.

What we can do however is to analyze our own life, look where we put God first, look where our wrongs are, admit how much is you and not Satan and then wrongs of the world last.  Look to see how we determine wrong and where we lay the blame?  Do we for instance blame satan (small ‘s’ because that’s all it’s worth) for our mishaps in life? Or do we face up to these anomalies and our mistakes?

Logically, if you look at God and accept God as the great creator (which was primarily Jesus’ teaching) without deviance from that perception; then you will accept that all things are in God’s control or established by a certain order for his creation to grow, with or without Him. Satan, man’s escape from responsibility then becomes the same as today’s perception of the scapegoat, ‘laughable.’ The choice is ours, the mistakes made; the evil road we walk or choose is our choice, not satan’s or God’s.  We are the ones that are maturing through a spiritual life system whilst materially bound on this earth and any temptation is a figment of one’s imagination manifested into reality.

Jesus said in one of his teachings about lust, “We can experience anything in this world, we can experience the whole thing in our minds, we do not have to experience it physically and commit a wrong.” (My interpretation)

Did not Jesus get taken in spirit to the top of the mountain and suffer temptation? He knew in his mind that he had a power at his finger tips that could make or break his journey. He could have been king in those days and other than the religious leaders of the time, no one would have stopped him.  He also knew that if he dashed himself on the rocks below, it would achieve nothing other than a sure death and did not allow his own thoughts to betray him as so many do when they find themselves in a powerful ego struggle within.

Note Jesus was taken in the spirit, it was a mental exercise, he was able to deliberate, experience and reject all in the space of a nano second. “Get yea behind me satan,” were his words to us all in explanation and to do when we find ourselves being tempted by our own ego, our own need for recognition, our own lust for material gain. Jesus gave it a name; mankind manifested it to a being.

Mankind has had to live this dualism of life to ascertain the good within him, he was too weak to say no and shorten the days.  Other cultures and practices have recorded and also made known these facts. In fact man has tried to destroy this wisdom time and time again replacing facts with wild dreams of an apocalypse a second coming, and satan. Mankind wants to see blood and thunder roaring from the heavens and for his precious pious soul to be lifted up as a saved one.  No man alive on this planet or ever lived could fill the shoes of a deity he proclaims he is like, no one, not a one.  But in the eyes of God we are all his children and Satan if he was but real?
