I believe gifts are a very nice way of telling someone that you care, and the best gift given is a gift given with no apparent reason. A gift should - for that - be something special, something you know that the person who will get it will love. That's why I am voting for homemade gifts, but not against store bought ones. If you choose to buy a gift fine, just make sure you are shopping for the person receiving it and not for yourself. You might hate black for example, but the person you are buying the gift for love it. Shop for HIM/HER and wrap the gift in black!
If you found something that when you saw you felt like it just fits for he/she, then by all means get it.
Why then homemade gifts are better in my humble opinion?
Simply, because it's personalized and made SPECIAL for the person getting it. For me, that means a lot. A special gift is as I said before a way of saying you are special and I care. And in homemade gifts you get to choose EVERYTHING; The colors, the fabrics, the gift itself and the card. The varieties are infinite and the only limitation you have is your imagination.
Also homemade gifts are something enjoyable. You get to get in touch with the artist trapped within you and let your imagination go wild. I know some of us may not be that much of an artist, but I believe that a gift made especially for someone will be cherished forever even if it looked ridiculous and will be well appreciated too.
I've been given LOTS of gifts since I was born. I liked some and didn't like others. But I have to tell you that the one I keep in my drawer and never think of throwing away though they might be worn out; are the special homemade gifts my little sis used to give me and the cards signed by friends. Those are the gifts I keep rereading and seeing every sometime. And those are the people I remember even though some of them I never see now.
Again not saying that shop bought gifts are bad. Any gift well thought off will be wonderful, it's just that homemade gifts sure takes a lot of thinking and doing which makes them extra special, at least to me.
