Scraping by, living on a dime, and hoping that a job comes ones way soon. Sadly that's the fair that many people have to live with these days. These people have the right to live comfortably without wondering how they are going to pay for their next meal.

This is where welfare comes into play. Welfare is a type of benefit that is given by the government to people in need of the finances. The money provided would then go towards buying food, and other necessities such as clothing. Welfare also helps in the paying of things like rent, phone bills and electric bills. The United States instituted their welfare program in the 1930's to help provide for the needs of the poor. Of course, though its core purpose has remained the same, like everything in this world, it has evolved somewhat. And now we see what it is today.

A lot of people have come to depend on welfare services in one way or another today, to eat, have a place to live. In simpler terms, they depend on welfare to survive. But is this a really good idea? Should people be dependent on welfare?

In the short term, where welfare is helpful with keeping oneself afloat and living, it should be by no means be depended on in the long term. As with any other benefits from the government, or any other entity for that matter, it should be viewed and used as a stepping stone towards a situation where one can be self sufficient and not have to depend on such programs as welfare and food stamps.
In fact many states, such programs are temporary. In some states you have to reapply for welfare every year. In others you have to meet certain requirements to continue to take advantage of the program. For instance, much like receiving unemployment, you may be required to look for work. If you don't meet those criteria

That's not to say that all things are equal. There are some cases that an individual cannot survive without welfare benefits backing them. These would be people that are so disabled that they are unable to work to support themselves. In this case one would expect that something would have to be done to help people in these types of situations. In this case depending on welfare, perhaps indefinitely or even permanently would be appropriate. Otherwise they would have nowhere else to turn. There are other situations too where having to depend on welfare to get by. But in most cases, it should only be a temporary fix.
