Doubtful is the statement money is the root of all evil. Money is an inanimate object, neither capable of thought or action. It doesn't think reason or even live. There is something that more than just money that makes that statement somewhat true.
That statement, so far as I am aware, is derived from a bible statement that says that the love of money is the root of all injurious (evil in some translations) things. But when using this statement, many leave out an important factor that even if you're not a bible believer, is still an important factor. People! Only people have the capacity to show love for an object such as money.
So really, it's not the physical object that causes the problem, it's the attitudes of the people that are capable of using money. How so? All one need to do to answer that question, is take a brief look at recent history and how money has affected different people in different circumstances.
Many people, for instance, have fallen for get rich quick schemes and lost a lot of money to them after they turned out to be scams. This has cause injury, or evil, to the person losing the money, in favor of the one gaining the money dishonestly. There is also the problem of theft. This can include breaking and entering into a residence or business to steal products to resell through another medium. Then you have your nervy robbers who will hold up businesses to get their measly 200 dollars or less that they tend to keep in their tills. Or even worse yet bank robbers who sometimes get away with tens of thousands of dollars by the sun sets. Situations such as these not only cause injury or evil by them losing their money, but there have been many incidents where people have lost their lives so that the person responsible can have the money they so desperately wanted.
Big business has even proven that when it comes to money, they would rather cause injury to other people then to go without the little bit of extra they would lose if they changed their ways. This is why there is so much debate as to whether environmental problems that most science has proven to exist and where the problem is coming from. It's not cost effective for big business to change its ways. For instance, it takes eleven million barrels of oil to produce the plastic grocery bags that are used in a year by the USA alone. But plastic is a horrible material that doesn't break down like organic materials do. To stop making this little hazardous convenience, can you imagine what kind of profit loss the oil companies would go through? At 36 or more dollars per case of bags, it's a huge loss likely ranging in the millions. This is another way that love of money has caused injury, not only to us but also to the planet itself.
So really the love of money is definitely the root of all evil. It is a necessity as we will always be on a barter type system. But putting it in such high regard causes injury, or evil.
