Is the chupacabra a misidentified animal?

Sightings of the chupacabra have been reported in North America, Central America, South America and Puerto Rico. It is reported that the chupacabra is responsible for the killing of goats, chickens and other livestock. In fact, the name chupacabra means goat sucker because the first corpses found were those of goats that were reportedly drained of blood.

There are many theories regarding the origin of the chupacabra. Some say that the chupacabra is a pet or the offspring of a pet left behind by aliens visiting earth. Others assert that the chupacabra comes from the future or a perhaps a different dimension and lives in a cave like structure underground. Of course there is also the conspiracy theory that the chupacabra is a secret government experiment gone awry and that the mutated animal escaped from scientists.

The chupacabra has been described as having quills running down the back of a half-alien, half dinosaur/vampire body without a tail by some witnesses while others say it looks like a panther with a forked tongue like that of a snake. Some describe it as a large lizard like animal that stands upright, between three and four feet tall. Still other witnesses say that it is an animal that hops and it can leap up to twenty feet high or it can fly. It is also claimed that the chupacabra has special powers which helps the creature hide, such as being able to change colors like a chameleon. With all of these fantastic claims, is it possible for such a creature to exist and what proof has been found?

An animal that was shot in Pollok, Texas in 2004 was claimed to be a chupacabra but later tests revealed it to be canine, possibly a coyote with a severe case of mange. In Puerto Rico there were reports of animals being killed by the chupacabra. Authorities told the frightened islanders that it was the result of stray dogs, baboons or some other animal that has been released illegally on the island. One veterinarian said that the deaths of the livestock were the result of a person that was a member of a religious sect or a disturbed person pulling a prank. It was later found that crocodiles that had been released illegally on the island were the culprits.

Other than the corpses of dead animals, verbal reports by witnesses and some questionable photos, there is no proof that a creature such as the chupacabra exists. Everything points to known animals or even humans being the perpetrators of the slaughter of livestock, not a chupacabra.
