Spirit
Created on: November 30, 2009
Everything is spirit in some sense. Quantum physics has proven that all matter is trapped energy - hence spirit. Spirit manifestations tend to emanate from the mind - someone's mind, be it the mind of God, a teen, a toddler or any sentient being embodied or disembodied ... perhaps even animals. We've all heard of pet hauntings!
Poltergeists are spirit or energy manifestations that are known for the psychokinetic phenomena that herald their presence. Whether these types of spirits are sentient themselves or simply mirroring the emotions of their "creators" is debatable. I'm inclined to think that some poltergeist's are intelligent entities, whereas others are well ... more like blind forces of nature.
Adolescents (many anyway) are known for being emotionally high strung - but one does not need a troubled teen in the house to experience poltergeist activity. Whereas it's true that poltergeist phenomena seem to thrive in an emotionally charged environment, I'm not convinced that's necessarily what makes them tick.
Psychokinetic ability has been attributed to gifted psychics from various walks and stages of life, and some say it is a "talent" that can be developed in most (if not all) sensitive people. I rather agree, and have dabbled in it a bit myself. Often, the power of concentration with a bit of an emotional investment is all that is needed to effect noticeable change in the environment - whether it be causing a candle flame to flicker or change hue, or slightly altering the ambient temperature in a room - or something much more dramatic. With the right "mind training" many have been able to achieve such effects - and they were certainly not all teenagers.
Uri Geller is a perfect example of such talent. Quantum physics has stated that the mere act of "observing" anything, creates changes in the thing observed - even if only at a sub-atomic level. Considering the popular "butterfly effect," eventually small changes ripple out in space and trigger more far-reaching phenomena. But I digress - that is not the same concept as that of a poltergeist ... or is it? Maybe it is just a matter of degree.
I have certainly experienced poltergeist phenomena - in particular with my daughter, but when she was a toddler and also when she was nineteen years old. I'm not so certain however that she was the cause of the phenomena; not by any means. Once, a florescent light bulb exploded on her when she was about three years old. In the same condo rental, a knife "jumped" off the kitchen counter in plain view, to land several feet away. Smoke alarms went off unaccountably and a toilet would mysteriously flush on its own. At the rental office, I was to find out that particular condo unit was "known" for its poltergeist activity. We were not the only ones to experience it! We were very happy to move out.
Further back, a cottage I stayed at both as a child, and as a newlywed was most definitely the site of sometimes violent poltergeist activity. Drinking glasses loudly exploding on their own (even in a cupboard) and strange noises in the night were part of what I and my family experienced there ... it was too much activity to be chalked up to coincidence.
The house I currently live in also has some evidence of poltergeist visitation. One evening, my daughter and I were startled by the loud sound of four definitely clear and rhythmic "knocks" that seemed to come from near the foot of the couch. No one was there - at least no one that we could see with the naked eye. I don't think my daughter (then nineteen) was the cause of it, in view of all the poltergeist activity I'd experienced in the past. Something, or someone "else" was trying to get our attention! I like to think it was a perhaps distant friend who was displaying some psychokinetic talent.
The following day I Googled the esoteric significance of "four knocks" and came up with some highly synchronistic leads; I even have a hunch as to the source of - and reason behind - the knocking. It was no one in our house!

Parapsychologists and ghost hunters the world over have attempted to unravel the mystery of Poltergeists for decades. Named for the German word of ‘noisy spirit’, the poltergeist lives up to its reputation.
Thousands of homes around the world have had their peace and quiet shattered by bangs and crashes, mysterious pools of water, furniture moved, damaged and in some cases completely destroyed by acts of fire, and on the odd occasion ghostly images and glowing eyes have been known to manifest.
Poltergeists are perhaps the scariest known occurrence within the supernatural realm. Very rarely does a person unfamiliar with the phenomena realise what is occurring when the incidences first start. In most cases scratching noises are first to be heard, followed by rapping or knocking. Electrical appliances can be blown or interfered with. The cause of this can often times be attributed to the natural workings of electrical surges or atmospheric temperature changes. Both are known to interfere with appliances and electrics and temperature adjustments can account for creaks and groans through floor boards and walls.
One of the first Poltergeist chasers Mr Harry Price, spent many years observing traits of the Poltergeist phenomena. Studies of Borley Rectory, one of England’s most haunted locations, provided a large number of photographic evidence and recordings in the field.
Hans Holzer, another great man of the paranormal spent many years studying the Amityville house. A house that has made it’s way into Hollywood stardom for the atrocities and supernatural happenings that have occurred there.
Perhaps the most recognisable version of a poltergeist comes from the 1980’s Hollywood movie, ‘Poltergeist’, turned into a series of movies shows the mischief and mayhem that can be caused. The Poltergeists in the movie are said to be the ghosts of a cemetery unhappy with the new housing estate placed over them, it does also show that one of the main characters possesses preternatural powers that enable the spirits to tap into the real world and wreak their havoc.
Scientist John Hutchinson claims to have been able to reproduce the effects of a Poltergeist in his own laboratory. Others have also made this claim as well as present evidence that certain atmospheric conditions such as ball lightning are known to create “activity”.
In the documentary “Interview with a Poltergeist”, parapsychologist Maurice Grosse presents evidence of Poltergeist activity and the torments it caused to an average family. Like most cases it was noted that a young girl was present in the home of puberty age. It has been seen before that boys have also been present in situations but it is more likely to be females. Studies of these children have shown that they generally possess powers of telekinesis and psychic powers. In many cases when the phenomenon begins there is evidence of unusually high stress levels in the prepubescent teen.
A well documented case involved Annemarie Schneider, a young girl of 19 who worked as a secretary in a law firm in Rosenheim, a southern town in Germany. Strange noises, electrical interferences, swinging lights, moving pictures, and disruptions to the phone lines were all seen and noticed by members of the company. Rigid testing and exploration by scientists failed to answer the riddle, however it is also well known that once the girl in question moved on so too did the activity. Many believe that Annemarie was a conduit for energy that was getting trapped and then being released with such force that it was able to move objects and interfere with the day to day running of the office. Also noted was Annemarie’s dislike of her work place. Was she able to project her anger or dislike into the real world? Or was she merely a pawn in an evil entities plan at chaos?
So far, science has not been able to back the claims of naughty spirits running mad through the land of the living like hooning spectres, it can however show that powers of psychokinesis and telekinesis can be tapped into whether knowingly or unknowingly. Personally until such day comes that I get tapped on the shoulder by a spirit stepping forward to claim responsibility for poltergeist activity my mind will only be capable of accepting scientific reasoning.
