ADD is a serious disease that is very hard on both children and parents. With this being said, there a definitely cases where a child may need medication to help deal with their ADD. Most, however, do not. Just a few decades ago, ADD was unheard of. There hasn't been a change in the way children act, just a change in accountability. OF COURSE doctors and pharmaceutical companies are going to say drugs are the answer because that means more money in their pockets and customers at their door. And generally, we are uninformed as to what else can be done to treat these children so we go along with what they say.
It seems that society nowadays wants to treat everything with prescriptions instead of looking for alternative methods to treat it. One of the main reasons we should be opposed to over medicating our kids is the awful side effects that come along with them.
Some of the main side effects are:
*nervousness
*sleeplessness
*deppression
*irritability
*stunted growth
In a lower incidence they can also cause:
* worsening ADD symptoms
* eating disorders
* high blood pressure
* lethargy
* psychosis
And even though some of the more serious side effects happen at a lower rate, they are still not uncommon. Do you really want want your young child to have to go through anymore than they already are?
It seems that we forget that kids will be kids and we can't expect them to just sit still with their hands in their laps 24/7. There ARE better ways to deal with ADD. Studies have shown that some children who experience hyperactivity actually have underlying problems such as food sensitivities and when those are treated the ADD improves significantly. I have seen this first hand. But still the medical system more and more wants to just drug the problem instead of fixing it.
Parents should always due their research first and search for alternative methods to treating ADD than just resorting to prescriptions. Now I know, once again, that their are cases with no other solution. But shouldn't we at least try first? Howare we going to improve health in the world if we keep resorting to the same solution of medications that have such devastating effects. The general population can take a stand and demand that other research is done for alternate help. These are our children we don't need to resort to taking the mainstream route just because it is popular. There is a better way.
