Michael Phelps will most definitely loose endorsements for smoking marijuana, there is no question asked. Michael Phelps has already lost an endorsement from Kellogg's. The Kellogg's company believes that since he smoked pot he is a bad influence on kids. Michael has also been suspended from the USA Swim Association. I don't think the question is, will Michael Phelps loose endorsements but how badly will he be hurt from this photo?

On Michaels side, many people smoke pot all around the world. Although the drug is illegal there are many more important issues in the world than one pot head athlete. So he smokes pot one time ( that we know of). If every person had an endorsement than half of the population would loose there endorsements. I think if Michael apologizes to the Country and the companies and does some form of community service, like teaching kids to swim or something of the sort he can fix his reputation. I think that, while being the worlds greatest Olympian, Phelps just needs to unwind and take a few hits from his bong.

The companies which Michael had endorsements with are doing the right thing by cutting Phelps loose. The big shoot companies are showing America and the world that smoking pot is not a smart thing to do. If I where the companies I would not cut Phelps loose but instead suspend him and his checks so that he can learn a lesson. But in the defence of the companies why would parents buy their children products who endorse pot heads. I don't think that the swimming related companies with cut Phelps loose because smoking pot will not affect the company image but the family oriented will crack down a bit.

Smoking any material is a stupid idea for any person so I don't see why anyone would do it. You can get cancer, your mouth will turn into a dump and its gross. Although if Michael wants to do drugs smoking from a bong is best. Smoking from a bong removes the carcinogens and leaves in the drug. But smoking anything is a bad idea for an athlete. I swim and i know how much you use your lungs in the pool so smoking pot will not only affect Phelps reputation but also his ability to preform at his meets. I hope for the sake of America's swim team that Michael Phelps will still be able to preform at his best and that he stop smoking.

In conclusion, Michael Phelps will loose many endorsements but not the major endorsements, he might loose a bit of ability to preform for the next year, but overall he is just going through a ripple in the pool of life. I look forward to seeing Michael Phelps swim in three months. Go Phelps you are still the greatest Olympian in my books.

I do not think Michael Phelps will lose endorsements because he smoked marijuana. Had he tried to deny it, or come up with a story alleging it was not pot in the bong, it might be a different story. However, he took full responsibility and owned up to it, apologized, and obviously recognizes the mistake he made.

In my opinion, the mistake was not that he smoked weed. The mistake was him trusting his friends or the people that he was partying with that they would not sell him out for their fifteen minutes of fame. Maybe smoking too much pot will cloud your judgement that much, but I am shocked that he decided to do this in front of random people at a party (assuming they were not his close friends).

Lets face it. A LOT of people smoke weed. It is becoming decriminalized across the globe and I agree with the decriminalization. If he wants to puff on a little herb then I say no harm done, but hopefully he keeps the smoking private from now on. If something like this rears its head again, he will likely lose all his sponsors (especially considering he has already been in trouble for drinking and driving in the past).

Unfortunately, society puts more of a negative spin on marijuana use than they do on alcohol consumption. I realize that this is not necessarily the topic of this debate but look at the negative ramifications of drinking too much versus smoking too much marijuana. It's not even in the same universe, drinking is far more detrimental to ones health and well being, along with the danger people put themselves and their families in when they drink too much. I think we need to look past what the government considers a 'dangerous drug' (marijuana) and focus our efforts more on curbing excessive drinking/ drinking and driving (especially for our younger generation).

As a parent, if I were forced to choose, I would much rather my child experiment with marijuana as opposed to alcohol. Granted, I don't want my children abusing anything, but alcoholism is a disease that becomes progressively worse and out of control. Whereas with marijuana, there is little chance of 'over-use' or 'abuse'. Generally speaking, once a person has a small amount of marijuana they are satisfied. Drinkers keep drinking, usually to the point of losing judgement to varying degrees of severity.

I think we, as society, are starting to recognize that marijuana should be decriminalized and it should not be looked upon with such negative connotations as alcohol.
