Turkey bacon better than regular bacon? To quote John McEnroe "You cannot be serious!". I find it hard to believe that anyone who has not undergone hypnotic reprogramming can actually argue that the flavor of Turkey bacon is superior to regular old fat-of-the-pig bacon. I will not argue that Turkey bacon is the better choice from a healthy living standpoint, but the flavor? Really? Not a chance folks I think as humans we are biologically programmed to prefer the taste of real bacon over this imposter. Bacon is packed full of what ancient humans looked for in a food product - calories and salt. In ancient times our species (as well as all other meat eaters) were on a constant quest to track down calories. We would hunt for days to find that perfect meal and our bodies needed calories - you never knew when you may track down that next meal. Consequently, our tastes have evolved to savor high calorie foods. Today food is abundant for most of us, so we don't have the need to consume high fat content foods anymore. Our tastes have not had a chance to evolve yet though so humans still love the taste of high fat content foods. A similar biological argument can be made for the high salt content in bacon. Ancient man did not have the luxury of table salt or processed foods in their cave, but the body still needed these salts. Over time, our tastes evolved to crave these salts when found to ensure that our predecessors got the salts their bodies needed. Again, we don't have the same needs today, but our tastes have not changed. So you see our lust for bacon is primal, deep seeded and cannot be denied. You may say that Turkey bacon is better for you and that is very true in todays world. I cannot accept however that Turkey bacon tastes better. To say this is saying you are a more highly evolved being that the rest of us and that is just plain elitist! I would hope that some day (many hundreds or thousands of years from now) we can say that the taste of fats and salts are not desired by our species. For now though, real bacon does taste better than Turkey bacon - it's a biological fact. To quote my boss: "If someone says they don't like the taste of bacon, they are a liar and should not be trusted. They may choose not to eat it, and that is fine, but you cannot deny you love the taste." So go on, keep telling yourself that you love Turkey bacon if it makes you sleep better at night. In your darkest dreams though, I know you are salivating of a plate of realy honest to God pig meat with fat!
