What really surprises me about this topic is the fact that there have already been 43 votes, and 65% side on the No side. That's mainly because most of the people voting do not know what Jallikkattu is. Jallikkattu, better known as bull-fighting, is the custom of starving bulls for days, then mixing very powerful liquor known as kallu with the rice that they feed to the bulls. Then they sharpen the horns of the bull, and tie bags of coins to the horns for the men who run with the bulls.
Another thing that surprises me, is the fact that the topic asks if Jallikkattu should be banned. Fact is, it is banned. The Supreme Court, acting on a petition filed by the Animal Welfare Board of India has taken a step toward the restoration of decency and civilised behaviour in Tamil Nadu by banning the custom of jallikkattu or Bull Taming. But the two Dravidian who have been in power in Tamil Nadufor 42 years just don't feel like it's a big thing to worry about.
"So what happened to Jallikkattu? It was termed barbaric! A cultural event practiced for millenniums together had suddenly opened the blinded eyes of the highest body of the judiciary in India!" - http://littleblossom s.blogspot.com/2008/ 01/bull-fighting-jal likkattu.html
Now according to this man, Jallikkattu was practiced for millenniums together. But this barbaric custom is not mentioned in any of the historical sources from the early historic period, and therefore the practice must have developed over the last 200 or so years. So yeah, don't use facts you can't back up. Anyway, I definitely do not believe that there should be anymore of this ritual of making bulls drunk and running them through crowds of people.
I do know that in Spain, there is a well-known controversial sport known as bull-fighting. Bull-fighting is basically a fight to the death between the matador and bull. I think that the same thing is going on in Tamil Nadu. If it's simply people running with some bulls for cash, i still don't believe that they should make the bulls drunk.
Bulls are red blooded animals, and they deserve to live. I don't see bulls making us run through the city and bulls trying to grab money off my ears...but that's because that would be a tad weird...Anyway, I hate PETA so i'm not going to get into that. People say that Jallikkattu is a celebration of life. If it's a celebration of life, why would you risk DEATH by running with bulls?
