From the time Eve allegedly ate the apple from the forbidden Tree of Knowledge, she had automatically relinquished God of all responsibility for humankind. God I believe is responsible for the initial Creation, according to the Bible; a perfect and ideal world. However, with knowledge comes accountability and responsibility. Something apparently Adam and Eve sought to force onto everyone else by their irresponsible, ego statistical and disobedient action. For this action, the consequence (reaction), was; knowledge of both good and evil and the accompanying responsibilities of each accordingly. Since God had given mankind free will, God did not see fit to renege on His Word. His Words took on the reverse and I believe became the Sword of the heart, mind and tongue that would rip out the heart of God within all of humanity.

Once humanity stops blaming God in believing that He (God), should be responsible for everything, humanity may well fair much better than it does now. We are made accountable and responsible for our own actions; God does not even listen to those playing the “blame-game” with Him. Almost every single day you will hear someone say; “you are responsible for your own actions”. Why is it I wonder why so many seem to have a distorted perception of their own realities when it comes to the crunch of responsibility?

In Genesis we are told; “we are Made in the image of God”. This no doubt included the trait or character of “free will” to make decisions for ourselves. However, the most important thing to remember is that man’s knowledge is limited. Thus, really, we can never say we can be 100% certain our decision is either right or for the best over-all. It is obvious that Eve, who allegedly ate from the Tree of Knowledge, was not aware of all probabilities and consequence associated with her action. Sadly and tragically for all humanity it was made known later, the first lesson or consequence bourn of human action. God had “warned” both Adam and Eve and “asked” that they not eat of the Tree of Knowledge. Eve decided to side with “evil” or disobedience to God. She and Adam were caste-out of God’s world because they “chose” to be. God made a counter-choice; “you shall no longer live in the place of goodness I had set aside for you both”. I believe God made this decision as the Bible tells us similarly; “good and evil cannot live on a parallel plane”. Thus, by Eve’s decision she left God no choice but to caste them out to continue on the path they had “chosen”. With “choice” comes responsibility, responsibilities they both had to meet, confront and resolve. In saying this though, God was generous in making an allowance for human weakness to temptation and made provisions for them both beyond the Garden of Eden. At this point I would like to highlight something I have always seen as rather striking; Eden, on the reverse can be seen as saying; ne de, within lays an anagram of; “need” and “end”. Thus I have in many ways seen the actions of Adam and Eve as being a direct result in the ending of what was otherwise a luxuries lifestyle! No sin! Misery is the result of sin, a very simple theology. We as humans need peace, peace ended with knowledge, governed by free will of many individuals to “choose” between the evil or goodness of it and was nothing short of a recipe for disaster.

God made other allowances as well. He gave us opportunity, grace, dominion over all life on earth, most of all; He gave us the “power of love”. Love, is no doubt one of the most powerful creators of earthly matter. With God’s own love, He Made all of Creation, with the power of our own love just as God did, we too create to a large degree our own earthly realities. However, in saying this, one must remember that “love” comes in many forms. So many people instantly think of love as a beautiful thing, however, like everything else in life, it has a duality. Love can be either “good or evil”.  For example; people who have a love of money and earthly riches will more times than not caste aside the love of humanity for its gain. Then there are those who will do the opposite with love and put aside money and earthly riches for the sake of humanity. Another example could be seen as matrimonial adultery.  A man and a woman may find love beyond their own spouse and destroy other people’s lives with their actions.  In this case, it could be assumed, they have “chosen” evil over good. Needless to say, a consequence will be borne of the action as a reaction to a cause. Whether or not, love is the governing force is totally irrelevant. Then there is the “tough” love, filled with kind but disciplined actions and reactions. Overall though, I see “love” as the most powerful energy of and within earthly creation. The potential outcome of the beauty of that “love” will be governed by the “choices” we make with it. It will either create or destroy; it has the capability of being a dual energy force like any other. It comes with good and evil, opportunity and consequence of one kind or another.

To say God is and or should be responsible for life as we know it would be an ideal way of relieving ourselves, humanity of the burden of responsibility. Seen from another perception, if God is or should be responsible for everything, then one would have to say God is entitled to everything! To highlight this by example, if God is responsible for everything, then it would be plausible to assume we too belong to God. Given that God us free will to “choose”, He leaves that “choice” to us, individually and collectively. God equips us with many tools to aid us on our journey through life. Such as hunger pains, to tell us to eat, else we starve, pain sensors to tell us when something is not good for us and the list goes on. I believe the most important and significant human trait God has equipped us with is “intuition”. Something to my surprise I discovered the Church condemns! Intuition, the very tool that leads and allows us to have a direct connection and personal relationship to God with is apparently seen as being satanic. Intuitively, like small children, or basic instincts will guide and direct us faultlessly. That little “voice” we all hear is often ignored and by majority according to psychologists, is our “creative imagination”! But it helps us decide between good and evil while God allows us to do so with our “gift” of both free will and intuition. The Inner-senses of the human design that with a firm belief and faith in God can transcend any human condition. It is only our imagination and/or human religious conditioning that will obstruct the ability to transcend a physical condition. Again, it is our “choice” to believe, as it is to “choose” between good and evil and be responsible on all accounts.

God also went one step further in sending His spirit to earth in the form of a man, Jesus. Jesus was to show and tell the world by concrete example all about His Father, God. God, the Being responsible for all of Creation and life initially. Needless to say, the majority of humanity did not listen and thus again, bore the consequence of their actions. The Word of God, brought with Jesus was recorded into many books and volumes; The Bible. Despite its age and no doubt some inaccuracies, for the most part, the Bible contains life-giving instructions to help us on our journey. I often hear people say; “if only life came with instructions”! But it did; they “choose” not to follow the instructions set down by their Creator. God will force no person to follow Him, His love, advice or guidance. That is the “choice” and with it there are many dualities of good and evil to be chosen. The “gift” of knowledge, comes with free will and responsibility, you cannot have one without the other as they are integrated. But God helped us out again, our unwanted “gift” of the knowledge Eve unleased on humanity came in time with an associated “gift” of wisdom found in God’s Book; The Holy Bible. In this book one can find A Cross, where a bridge can be found between the two worlds of humanity and God. One only has to walk “a cross” with their heart, mind, body and soul to God’s love.

This is I believe God’s only responsibility; to love those who love Him, to be with those who are with Him in Oneness, to answer those who call Him. All other responsibility lies with humanity, both individually and collectively. Accountability and responsibility is first with it’s maker, then secondarily with God who will judge the weight of our hearts upon being received by Him when our spirit, housed in our human mortal body is returned to Him, to whom really, we do belong.

When we give the term 'responsible" a subjective interpretation it tends  to clouds our perception and the intent of the question.  My interpretation of the question is that we are asking ourselves if G-d participates in all aspects of existence and mediates and directs actions resulting in a "good" or "bad" diagnosis  on our part.  The answer is "yes".  G-d is always there. He is always omnipresent and all knowing.  There is nothing that can be done, in effect, outside of His will or permission.  Thus, all things that happen, rather seemingly good or bad, are in the hands of G-d.  If we interpret "responsible" as a source of blame or negative involvement then we  have a problem.  G-d has set into motion certain "laws"....cause and effect..  If we subjectively ask if G-d, for example, made our car wreck, and is ultimately responsible for the effects of the wreck then the answer would be "no.".  When we choose to make wrong decisions we reap the consequences of those decisions.  But, as with all aspects of Free Will and free moral choice, the issue is a bit complicated.

Isaiah 45:7 says, G-d speaking "I form light and create darkness: I make peace and create evil. I, the L-rd, do all these things." So is this the answer? What does it mean to "create darkness". If I remember correctly, Karl Barth, an existential theologian, suggested that in creating Himself in space and time G-d created that which was "not G-d". This space or void which was "not G-d" contained in it the potential for evil. This would, in a sense, seem to support the Kabbalistic understanding of the nature of G-d and the Eyn Sof.  Although Kabbalah emphasis that no place exists where there is not a spark of the divine....G-d delights in concealment...He hides His light from the world and holds secures it revelations  for the righteous.  So we have varying degrees of connection with the divine.  WE experience varying degrees of light.   G-d created a void in which to create the universe through a process called Tzim Tzim...a contraction of Himself much like the contractions of childbirth. So in creating a space which was "not G-d", a void so to speak, the universe could exist.  And so could our Free Will....And so could evil. But in every created thing G-d interjected "sparks" of the divine. In everything we have both good (G-d), and the potential for evil. That is precisely why we must work with G-d to help in the repairing of our world. G-d is existentially connected with His creation. And thus we can have the verse in Deuteronomy 30:15: "I have set before you life and good, death and evil...now choose.

So with this hodge-podge of information what am I trying to say. Simply this: G-d created and uses evil, but, it's responsibility is also ours. We work together with G-d to bring good or bad into our world.    Also, what we perceive as "good" or "bad" is sometimes not the correct perception. G-d sees the entire picture.  And most importantly: Without bad there could be no good. I remember hearing a story about a man who had a very very important business meeting in another state. On the way to the airport his cab driver made a wrong turn and he arrived at the airport too late for his plane. "This is the worst thing that has ever happened to me" he cried "Why G-d, did you let this happen!? This is very very bad!" but as he turned to leave the airport he heard over the loud speaker that his plane had just crashed on takeoff, bursting into flames, and all passengers were killed. "O.K. G-d" he began again, "This is very very good." We have  limited perception. The questions of pain and suffering are important and sometimes unanswerable questions.   And, I am not taking lightly the questions related to just how far G-d will let mankind go in his "dominion of the earth" nor do I ignore these questions. Is there redemption in suffering? Does suffering serve a purpose that we do not comprehend? The very premise of these questions must refer back to my major presupposition: G-d is a good and just G-d. Every action He performs is based on his divine attributes of Compassion.

In conclusion,  both "good"and" bad" have  purpose. If we choose to destroy our world through senseless acts of violence and pollute the earth through greed...G-d allows it. But when we choose to repair the world, G-d is also there. Can we blame G-d for starving children in the Sudan when we throw away enough food to feed them because we arrogantly abdicate our personal responsibility? Allowing both good and bad is the very premise of free will. We don't always know the answers as to why bad occurs, but we must always know that G-d is leading the world to a final redemption. G-d allows both good and evil in the world, but we all share in the responsibility.
