I can't believe I'm writing an essay about a teen celebrity's rhinoplasty. I have no shame. But I have an opinion about everything, and this is no exception. Ashley Tisdale should never have had a nose job in the first place, but the one she got is typically awful.

Ashley Tisdale is a popular 23-year-old actress/singer famous for her role in Disney films. She had major roles in the High School Musical franchise of movies and concerts, and parlayed that into a successful music career with some mediocre albums. But she has a built-in fan base that any singer would envy. And because she has been bought up buy the Disney machine she has a vested interest in not limiting her appeal to the children because, although Disney is a terrific vehicle for the rising star, it also has a tendency to cut their talent loose after they grow past the age of being able to play teens.

Ashley decided to have rhinoplasty in 2007. She tries very hard to convince her fans that it was a wholesome and medically necessary procedure. She was correcting a very badly deviated septum. Well, Ashlee Simpson, Jennifer Aniston and Cameron Diaz have all made the same claim, but you will have to forgive me if I take all these protestations a bit cynically. I've had a deviated septum repaired. It's didn't change my appearance.

Ashley, on the other hand, has a significantly different face. Before and after (and way after) pictures reveal that aside from any septum deviation being corrected, there was significant shortening and narrowing performed. Some photos may even show a second surgery to further the effect, but that is just supposition. The sad truth is that a shorter and narrower nose, although it may appear better on film or television, really isn't very attractive.

Ashley's new nose looks like it was forced through a playdough machine. It is angular and unusually pointed. Her nostrils are more pronounced. The proportions of her nose now look really wrong.

This is all serious nit-picking. I'm so unconcerned about personal appearance that I have been arrested several times by the fashion police, and I don't care if I wear two tones of black at the same time. And I still think that Liza Minnelli and Kathleen Turner are really sexy, even though they are no longer lithe and willowy. But excuses aside, a nose job did not help Ashley.

You see, Ashley Tisdale is cute. She is attractive as only a very few select human beings can be. If physical beauty were an Olympic sport, she would probably be a contender for a medal. And to that end, she has tried to modify her appearance to match the unrealistic goals of the Hollywood and fashion magazine standards of a society obsessed with physical and materialistic perfection. Unfortunately she took a fresh and appealing face and turned it slightly creepy. I shudder to make the comparison, but I am too much reminded of Michael Jackson.
