Pants

I very much prefer working out in pants rather than shorts for many reasons.  One main reason is that pants, especially sweatpants, enable me to work up a better sweat than do shorts.  For instance, when I go running or jogging, I prefer to wear pants, or sweatpants during the winter, because it makes me sweat quite a lot and therefore helps me to keep off some of those extra pounds that continuously try to come back!  Also, I highly recommend always working out in pants for another reason.

And this is the fact that you can perform just about any and every kind of workout while you are wearing pants.  This is not really the case when it comes to wearing shorts during a workout.  For instance, I would never wear shorts to the gym when I was going to perform a hard-core abdominal workout.  And this is for one main reason.  Many abdominal exercises require you to more or less lay down on your back and have your knees in the air, at least in part of the workout.  And if you get into this position when you are wearing shorts, often your shorts will tend to ride up your leg a little, sometimes a little farther than you might want them to! This is the primary reason that I do not wear shorts during a workout.

However, there is another reason that perhaps I should mention.  One of the most important things to consider when you are deciding what to wear during your workout is the matter of good overall flexibility and blood circulation throughout your body.  While some shorts may very well and probably do offer good flexibility and provide for good overall blood circulation, there are indeed many shorts out there that do not.  There are several kinds of shorts out there that actually hamper your movement and can definitely affect your blood circulation in a negative manner.

Also, there is another thing that should be a primary concern for those deciding what to wear during their workouts.  And this is the matter of wearing something that enables you to accomplish a wide range of motion while at the same time being extremely comfortable.  I always highly recommend wearing something that you find to be very comfortable during a workout.  If you do, it enables you to focus entirely on your physical workout and on achieving your goals.  If you wear something that is not comfortable, often times you will not perform certain exercises that are actually crucial to the pursuance of your exercising and physical goals.  Sometimes you will even give up on your workout on the days that you wear something that is not comfortable.  Yes, I much prefer to wear shorts during a workout for several reasons.

Shorts

Slipping into my adorable shorts before hitting the gym, I psych myself for an intense workout.  Color-coordinating my strappy tank top with my boy-cut shorts, I take one last look in the mirror before ascending the stairs to the gym floor.  Accuse me of vanity if you dare, but I am pleased with the body I have painstakingly shaped through countless hours of weight-training. Without a doubt, shorts reign supreme in my fitness attire.

When I first began training, I wore tattered sweatshirts completed with my brothers’ cast-away pants.  Throughout my workouts, I continuously rolled up the pant legs, as my 5’ 2” frame was a bit shorter compared to my 6’ brothers.  Shrouded in oversized clothing, it was nearly impossible to connect my mind to my muscles for ultimate output.  Feeling fearfully dowdy, my motivation to exercise diminished significantly.

Peering into my drawers for that horrid clothing combination for my workout at 5:00 a.m. one morning, I had a revelation.  My eyes were drawn to that charming tennis outfit stuffed in the corner.  Taking the plunge, I squeezed into the form-fitting top and matching bottoms.  Instantly, I felt a swelling self-confidence surge through my being.  What would Mr. Muscles at the gym think of me, now?

Enthusiastically arriving at my fitness club, I strode to that squat rack for a warm-up set.  Watching every muscle ripple with exertion during the movement, excitement swelled within me.  Mind-muscle connection was now attainable, since I could visibly see the force of my output.  Prior to my emergence from that stifling unattractive cocoon, the gym regulars did not give me a second glance.  On the contrary, I was acknowledged with a sideways smile and friendly grunt by Mr. Muscles. This session forever changed my workout regime, as I sensed a psychological boost in my exercise intensity.

Discover the power within you to achieve your most coveted goals.  Stand apart from the crowd through creating your own identity. For those afraid to bare some skin, I dare you to take the following challenge for one month.

Shop for 3 new color-coordinated short/tank top combinations. Wear those new combos to exercise instead of your drab castoffs. Perform your exercise in front of a mirror.  Connect your muscle movements to your mind. Boost your self-esteem by transforming your prior image. Enjoy the admiring comments you receive by other club members. Encourage others through your exemplary positive body image.

At the conclusion of one month, review the definite progress you have made in your workouts.  By displaying your developing muscles publicly, you are making yourself accountable to those around you. Pursue your physique shaping, bulking up, or toning aspirations.  Believe it or not, your results are directly related to your choosing shorts over pants.
