Is God relevant in today's world?

Relevant is defined as: "closely connected or appropriate to the matter at hand" by the New Oxford American Dictionary. It appears that the "matter at hand" is today's world. So, let's take a look at today's world, shall we?

The world today exists in a state of chaos, caused by the various religions that have gained prominence in our time. Yes, that's right. Caused. All sides of the current conflict believe that their own version of God's word is the only truth that one should live by. This is not something that can be disputed by anyone who is a member of one of those religions. To do so would be to give up everything they believe in. Even in America, arguably the most tolerant of countries toward the religions of the world, our Christians do not really believe that Muslims, or Jews, know the truth. The core belief of Christianity is that if you do not believe in, and worship, Jesus, you will not get everlasting life. Dispute this, if you dare.

Unfortunately, it is the same for the others. Actually, Islam is the most tolerant of all belief systems. The Islamic faith may very well say that there is only one God, Allah, and Muhammad is his prophet, but even Muhammad stated that the "Infidels" have a right to their beliefs, even if they are wrong: they will learn the truth in the end, was his take on the situation. Wow, tolerance from a religion. Seems strange in today's world, does it not?

However, the question is does God have relevance in today's world? Well, obviously, though many of us may wish it differently, He does. Or the Gods have relevance. See, I believe that each God is a separate and distinct deity. I know. I'm a pagan and doomed to the Fires of Hell. But nothing else makes sense to me. No matter how the situation works out in the living world, when we die we will find out one of three things.

1. All the possibilities are real. I mean by this that no matter what God you actually believe in, you will find yourself in Heaven surrounded by people who believed something different than you did when you were alive.

Or, 2. Only one of the possibilities was true. Depending on which God, or truth if you prefer, you believe in, you will find yourself in Hell or Heaven accordingly.

Or, 3. That none of them were correct and all there is when you die is a coffin or cremation and no afterlife at all.

So, how can God have any relevance today, other than what each religion gives to him just by existing? The truth is, he, or they, can't. Two thousand years ago, man's very existence relied on God. Today, we have learned to do things for our human selves. I know that those who believe in religion will argue that God provides for them, even today. However, in the current context of our world, and especially, our economy, I wonder how many have found differently. How many of the victims of 9/11 were Christians, Jews or Muslims?  How many who thought that God had provided a great job, are now out of work? Is it possible that not one believer has lost his job, or his life? Maybe, but the odds are against it. So, the next question is, why those who did lose their jobs? Were they not really believers? I assume that many believers will say this is probably true; that they couldn't have been true believers or God would not have abandoned them.

In all honesty, I believe that the Gods abandoned humans long ago. I think they took a look at what we had wrought from the world they had provided us, saw where we were headed and decided to leave us to our own devices. I believe they will be back, only when Armageddon threatens. I know my opinions are controversial. In this case, they are probably so to both believers and non-believers. So be it.  We all have a right to our beliefs. The difference is, I'm not trying to convince you that my beliefs are the ONLY truths mankind needs to know. I could wish that everyone felt like I did, but I know that is an impossibility. So, I will give you only what I HOPE to be truth, and let you make up your own mind. But, just as an exercise in theoretical thinking, is it possible that I have been given a truer version of the Gods than those who believe in the world's most popular religions?

For me to say that is exactly what happened makes me crazy. Or at least many of you will so believe (there's that word again). But, it can be argued that that is exactly what happened. That during this troubled time of the world, a new voice is needed to temper the religions of today's world, and I was chosen. Before you get hysterical, I'm not crazy. I don't believe this to be true. I'm saying it could be, whether you agree or not.

So we come back, again, to the question: Is God relevant in today's world? And, as I said above, only as much as the religions of the world give to him, or them, as the case may be. And unfortunately, that is a whole piss pot full of people to deal with. Each and everyone of them thinking that they know the only truth mankind needs to know. Relevant or not, God is very much a part of today's world.

I think the relevance of God in today's world is even more necessary and important than ever before. Just as children who grow up without the physical presence of a parent do not know where to draw the lines as far as their behaviour, ethics or morality is concerned,  human beings face a similar fate without God in their lives.

When you look around at the world today there is no "safe" zone left any more. We are afraid to let our children out to play alone, travelling is unsafe because of attacks or kidnappings, racially motivated hatred is rife, religious intolerance is widespread and modern age children are the most "grown up" as far as sexual promiscuity and rudeness is concerned. In addition we are seeing women as young as 11 becoming mothers with illegitimacy at its most widespread. Moreover, The people who have been put power to lead us, either through elections or through self appointment, are only helping to lead the world towards disaster through tactics of domination and aggravations motivated by wealth, animosity or power or all three

Looking at all these aspects, we are going to have a society in the future in which humans are going to be at their most cynical and immoral. There will be obsession with materialism which has already shown its evil and greedy side with large organizations and their actions bringing about the downfall of our society as we watch. There is the desire to stay younger for as long as possible and the trends are already in place with cosmetic procedures available for the young and the old freely. It is a desperate fight against time to achieve the fountain of youth and the outcome is older people having a strange "artificially" enhanced look that makes onlookers feel almost sorry for them.

We hear of by parents committing crimes against their own children through cases of child abuse and child killings. Not a single day goes without hearing of drug or drink related crimes. It could be because we have minute by minute media reports available from around the globe that make us aware of what the world is getting up to, something that we could not get easy access to years ago when crimes could safely lie hidden. And then again, maybe human beings have always had this destructive side to their natures which was evident by the two world wars, the holocaust and the great depression that our world has already witnessed. But it has never been as worldwide as it is now

Human beings need to be redirected back to what is good, what is moral and what is right for themselves, for other people and for the environmental well being of our planet. For this, they have to go back to finding their spiritual paths again and learn how to be humble and accountable for all their actions. With information so easily available to our society it is time to start studying the books that were revealed to us as guides on how we should live as human beings. Every intelligent device comes with a manual and we are no different. For our spiritual and moral behaviour we have to follow the principles that were laid down thousands of years ago, relevance of which has not changed over time.

We might have fast cars or aeroplanes and we might be very IT literate or financially astute but deep down we are made up of the most basic of feelings. We want to be loved, looked after and respected. We like good behaviour and we hate being lied to and being stolen from. We do not like being cheated and we do not like the feelings of jealousy and anger and killing one another is definitely not on our agenda. Wherever we live in the world we have an inborn instinct towards following these basic rules. They make society responsible and safe for us and our future generations. So that brings us back to what God gave to Moses all those years ago, the Ten Commandments. What God knew then as principles for mankind to follow are as apt and applicable now for the modern man as they were then for the civilizations of old.

We need to bring back the fear back into ourselves and remember that our actions have repercussions and we will have to answer for what we do and how we behave. We are accountable to someone and that someone is God who made us. It is time we realised this and started remembering Him again and bringing Him back into our lives and our children's lives. If we do not do that we might as well be creatures who have been let loose on this earth without meaning and reason. Before long we will end up destroying ourselves and this planet like some sort of parasites who multiply and eat the host in the process. There were generations before us who were destroyed because they stopped believing or caring.

Those who believe in God read their holy books and there are warnings and stories about people from previous nations who were destroyed because of how they behaved towards each other and through their immoral and inhuman actions which caused their civilisations to be destroyed.

In the Koran in Sura Al Anam (6) it says, "See they not how many of those before them we did destroy? - generations We had established on the earth, in strength such as We have not given to you - for whom We poured out rain from the skies in abundance, and gave (fertile) streams flowing beneath their (feet): yet for their sins We destroyed them, and raised in their wake fresh generations (to succeed them)"

Let us not be like these lost generations who came to earth only to destroy or hate. It is time we looked at the beauty of the earth we have been given for a limited period of time and make this journey the best one of our lifetime And let us not live without remembering the one who sent us here in the first place, God.
