Can Thomas really be considered the first pregnant man? I think not. If you just scratch the surface of this, it is impossible for a man to bear a child which is why there was so much publicity around this story.
While, I believe in equality and gay rights I do not agree with blurring the lines between genders. I think you are either a man or a woman. Even people, who are transgender, eventually become the gender that they believe they really are. I do not agree however, that people have the right to skew the line between male and female. Then there is the argument that Thomas is "transgender", well he has not and as far as I could tell from the interview does not desire to become a full fledge "man." Thomas has chosen to have "his" breasts removed but did not undergo a full sex change. According to his 20/20 interview it was because he does not think your genitalia is what determines your sex. The last time I checked that was in fact how the gender of a person was decided but that is beside the point.
I think Thomas enjoyed the publicity and enjoyed the freak show that surrounded him and his partner. I believe that people have the right to procreate no matter their sexual preference; I believe gay couples should have the same adoption rights as heterosexual couples. So did he even really want to be a parent or did he just want the notoriety of being the "first pregnant man?" The fact of the matter is; Thomas is a woman, not a man, a child bearing, ovulating, able to give birth-woman. And what about the poor children that this couple is having? Again, I do believe in gay right equality. However, everything that we learn tells us that women conceive, carry and give birth to babies. So how will they explain this? Your Daddy who is really your Mommy gave birth to you because she/he still has all of her girl parts? I think this is disgusting and selfish and childish to have pulled such a "prank." The sad thing is that the population and the media bought into it.
One of the most alarming things I heard in the interview was that they could not find a Doctor that would impregnate Thomas, so they bought sperm from the internet and Thomas's partner used a turkey baster, really? Disgusting. While I'm sure they felt that outsiders did not have the right to decide whether or not they could conceive a child, maybe they should have looked past their own selfishness.
Everyone has had so much to say about the woman known as "Octo-Mom," saying that she is crazy and has poor judgment, but yet a woman who is a man who is really a woman can have a baby by buying sperm from the internet. What the heck has our world come to? I believe that the decision at hand is whether Thomas wants to be a man or a woman, you cannot be both and MEN do not/cannot bear children.
