Traditions must be respected and preserved only when they don't cause death or suffering to human and animal beings and must be changed when necessary.
Also human sacrifices, cannibalism, gladiator fights, duels to resolve private contrasts were considered traditions, but they have been eventually abolished and fought as barbarian or inhuman uses, as most of people realized all the damage done.

Human cruelty has no limits, as we should know and has always made many victims among animals, denying them the dignity and even the right to live.
Bear fur used for the uniforms of the English royal guards is only a little but meaningful example of this cruelty and it has become a tradition because its use, together with bears killing, was performed with a total indifference about its meaning.

Personally, I'm contrary to every use of animal fur or leather because totally useless (today, replaced by more efficient synthetic materials against cold) and only an expensive luxury for the caprices of rich people; so, also bear fur for these traditional uniforms can be easily replaced with synthetic fur, easily produced with the same appearance of the original one from bears and whatever other animal.
This would save the life to a limited number of bears, given that the production of these uniforms is not surely on a large scale but it's also the principle that counts and, in any case, it would be a little conquest for our civilization, toward a better relation between us and animals.

Bears of all species are more or less endangered in all the world today; from the great white bear of the Arctic Ocean to the brown bear of the Apennines, in Italy (my Country), a sub-species of the European brown bear, reduced to only 40-50 individuals in the National Parks of Abruzzi, Italy, by legal and illegal hunting and by the reduction of its habitat.
Surely, replacing the bear fur of these uniforms with synthetic fur, nobody will notice the difference and the tradition and the history represented by these uniforms and by whom wear them will not be changed or contamined.

The British Ministry of Defense can surely adopt this decision, on the more reason, considering that it's ruled by a Minister belonging to the Labour Party who should be (but I would say better: "must be") more sensible to animal defense and respect; the fake fur in soldiers' uniforms doesn't decrease their military efficiency or prestige, if this were the worry of the Ministry.

England has already banned fox hunting recently, another ancient but cruel tradition, despite the opposition of the most traditionalist people who always see as a catastrophe every change in social habits, rituals or traditions.
This is surely an encouraging precedent for this new problem to resolve and I can be optimist about it.

I don't know at what point is this battle against bear fur use but, from what I know about England, the traditionalist opposition will be again strong, if this change hasn't been adopted yet today, after so many years of animalist battles for animal rights.

Another favourable argument to this replacement is that fake fur is surely much cheaper than the original bear fur and saving some money (together bears' life) would be a good argument for the British Ministry of Defense.

Replace the Bear Fur?

~

Before I get my head chewed off by animal lovers everywhere let me explain why I have taken the stand not to 'replace' the Bear Fur on the royal guards uniforms. You could say it's all in the wording. Do I feel the uniforms should be 'remodeled' with a fiber or fake fur? Yes I do.

To replace all the fur would render the death of the bears as waste. We have far too much waste on this planet as it is, why add to it. I love all creation and it breaks my heart to think of any animal as having to suffer. But the fur that is already in the system should be utilized. Not only would it be the wasted life of bears that have already died for this cause, but in this tough economy it would also be a waste of finances to replace all the uniforms and purchase new ones.

Using the fur of an animal that has died of natural causes, or was killed for subsistence is also acceptable in my estimation. Unfortunately we live in a corrupt world where money is a God and greed dictates that people will not wait for an animal to die but will instead poach. No matter the laws and regulations there are those who continue this practice regardless the punishment. This is an unfortunate fact that we are forced to live with.

Man was given an assignment to care for the animals as we can see in Genesis 1:27, 28 "And God proceeded to create the man in his image, in God's image he created him: male and female he created them. Further, God blessed them and God said to them 'Be fruitful and become many and fill the earth and subdue it, and have in subjection the fish of the sea and the flying creatures of the heavens and every living creature that is moving upon the earth.'" As it stands right now man is doing a miserable job.

Take heart though, there will come a time when mans greed will subside and all will care properly for the earth and everything in it that Jehovah God has entrusted to his care. This will be a time when animals will no longer suffer cruelty at mans hand and man will not cause harm each other any longer either. Those who are insistent in continuing in this wrong course will be done away with as we can see in Psalms 37: 9, 10 "For evildoers themselves will be cut off, but those hoping in Jehovah are the ones that will possess the earth. And just a little while longer, and the wicked one will be no more; And you will certainly give attention to his place, and he will not be."

Yes the time is approaching when we will live side by side with the animals in peaceful conditions. We will not harm them and they will not harm us as stated in Isaiah 11: 6 "And the wolf will actually reside for a while with the male lamb, and with the kid the leopard itself will lie down, and the calf and the maned young lion and the well-fed animal all together: and a mere little boy will be leader over them." What a wonderful time we have to look forward to. A time when a question like "should we replace real fur with fake fur" will never come up again.
