Should the federal government play a proactive role in protecting the health and safety of Americans? I believe that if I am paying the government, I do want them being my eyes and ears in situations that will affect me.   We shouldn’t want the government to take our money and do nothing.

There is always the debate among Democrats and Republicans of what governments role should be.  Democrats want there to be government involvement.  They want government to be the eyes and ears for the country.  Republicans don’t want any government involvement at all.  They feel that once elected, the government should basically remain hidden and silent.

What is the purpose of a government that does nothing?  As tax payers we should want these people we are paying to do something.  We can’t expect everyone to do everything right.  Can we imagine what the world would be like if that was the case?  If there was no crime and no corruption?  Is this the world that we live in?  Are all major companies giving back to the communities they are in?  Are all companies using health friendly ingredients or equipment?   Not all Americans are decent, to believe so is rather naive.

We need someone to be the eyes and ears in a world that doesn’t always have our best interest at heart.  This is the job of the government.  Why should we pay anyone to do nothing?  If anyone believes that we should pay people to do nothing, I can think of a few people that need employment.

We should revisit slavery.  Should the government not have gotten involved in ending slavery? If there wasn’t government involvement, would this have ended on its own?  We want the government to protect us from the terrorists that are on the outside, what about the terrorists that are on the inside?   Why should our government use our money only to help non-Americans?  Why should our government only look after other countries, and not ours?

Let’s visit the current issues with our government today.  We don't want government getting involved in our safety.  We want the right to carry guns.  We want the right to not have health care.  The government is offering every American the opportunity to have cancer treatment should the need presents itself.  We don’t want this right offered?

The government is saying no more smoking in public places.  Smokers are upset because government is getting too involved.  Why is the smokers right more important than the right of the nonsmoker?  Why should we have to inhale smoke because you want too?

We are upset because the government wants calorie counts at restaurants. Why do some feel because they don’t want it, no one wants it.  Some of us want to know if we are digesting 150 calories or 1600 calories. The government is advising that anything over 1500 calories can’t be sold.  The government is advising that everything should be made public.

We shouldn’t mistrust a government for being open and honest.  We should worry about the government that remains hidden.  Yes the government should remain involved in protecting Americans health and safety.  It is what we are paying them to do.

Absolutely NO! Are we not intelligent grown adult human beings? Most of those elected to government can not control or better their own lives, why do you expect them to be able to help yours? This topes grates me to the core. We have bans and laws that are supposed to "protect" us and help us to live longer. Yet most of these laws and bans are in place to only feed the local, state, and federal government with more of your money. Plain and simple, seat belt laws do not protect us, smoking bans do not protect us, Trans fat laws do not protect us, and car insurance laws do not protect us. There is not one conclusive study that has proven beyond a shadow of doubt that any of these laws or bans protects us!

The whole point of being here on this earth is to live. That doesn't mean to live by other's rules and regulations, but to live by your own God given morals and rights as a human being. Throughout history, there have been numerous dictators and governments and churches that have done everything that they can to take away your God given rights as a human being. There will always be the bad element in society, but we should deal with those elements. I am a law abiding, God fearing adult. I believe that God intended for me to be happy while here on this earth. I believe that God wants us to be free to choose. That is exactly what this country was founded on. Individual rights and freedoms as set forth from God. Though there is separation of Church and State, many have twisted that concept to mean something other than what it was originally intended. All it simply means is that no church can establish itself as the government. As an example, in England, the church is also part of the government. That is what separation of church and state means people. We have the freedoms to speak, write, and do what we choose. Of course that means within the confines of the laws. Any good intelligent person knows this. There are always those who choose to not follow the laws of the land. The laws that I am speaking of are the simple ones. The simple laws we follow to not steal, not kill another, and so forth. I think you understand what I am trying to say here. Basically, my life is what I choose to make of it.

There are many people who believe that wearing a seat belt endangers their lives due to accidents that have proven fatal due to the restraints becoming stuck. So why does the government feel the need to impose that on those who fear them? The answer is simple, money! The local, state, and federal government makes a lot of money off of fines due to these useless laws. The same with smoking bans. There are numerous studies that state that second hand smoke has no affect on the average person. No affect! Yet, these anti smoking groups were allowed to advertise that one whiff of cigarette smoke exposes you to lung cancer. What ever happened to accountability? Many people die from lung diseases and cancer who never smoked a day in their lives. There are so many other things that we breathe that hurt us other than plain old cigarette smoke. Again, smoking bans save no one, they only funnel more money and power to your government on all levels.

I truly believe that everything imposed by the government under the false guise of protecting your health is nothing more than a way of taking away your freedoms. Why would the government really care about your health? What do they gain by saving you? They gain your freedoms and your ability to choose for yourself. As a society in whole, have we become so weak that we have turned to our government to swoop in and save us? The government can not even balance its own budget! Have we forgotten the history of other countries who allowed their government to control everything? Do you remember Russia? Look at China. What about Germany and Adolf Hitler? Did you know that one of the ways Hitler started gaining control of his people was through smoking bans, and then continued from there? All of this is simple; we are all adults who have a brain. Educate yourself on the basics.

Here another thing about the government protecting our health. Have you noticed that since the government started putting fluoride and chlorine in our water supply, how much cancer rates have gone up? Have you noticed in the past 50 years or so, since we started consuming artificial food additives that our cancer rates have gone up? Did you know that back in the 1920's that cancer was rare? Yet more people smoked then than now. So what do you really think has contributed to the cancer rates? I believe that artificial foods, drugs, and chemicals in our foods have greatly contributed to our health problems. Fast food, packaged foods loaded with unnatural preservatives and the likes are harming our basic core cells. These unhealthy additives that we eat and drink daily are destroying our natural cells and our ability to fight off diseases. Sodas with unnatural sweeteners are another huge culprit. We do not need fluoridated water to prevent tooth decay; we need education on how to properly take care of our teeth. We do not need preservatives to make food last beyond normal ranges; we need to simply eat healthy farm grown food without preservatives or pesticides. We should pay more attention to what is really in our water supply, especially home wells. Our society has gotten so very lazy that no one cooks home made foods anymore. Butter is always better than all of the other "fake" butters. All of us need to educate ourselves on what we eat and drink and stop allowing the government to do that for us.

I will give on a few aspects. I do not believe that big corporations should be allowed to pollute our air, ground, and water supply. That is probably the only time I feel the government should protect us. Other than that, my answer would have to be no. I believe in quality of life, not quantity. What is the point of living if you are not free?
