Looking at the way TNA is structured, it does not seem to be that of the present. The reason for saying that is because of the Main Event scene pretty much consisting of wrestlers that have been big names in the past but the ratings hasn't gone up enough to be a threat to the WWE. If anything, it could be looking at a situation where wrestlers are trying to live up to past glory.
Sure, there is a new storyline with this Main Event Mafia but it is like the New World Order or maybe even going back in time to some extent the Four Horsemen but that's a stretch.
The TNA World Champion right now is WCW legend Sting. To better take a look at the situation, the Main Event scene consists of wrestlers who are just about ready to retire from the ring.
Now, to be fair not all aspects of TNA would be considered of the past. The X-Division has guys of the present. You have guys there like Alex Shelly, Chris Sabin, Jay Lethal, and others along the way. There is the character Suicide though coming from the TNA video game. That has to be a weird name to have for a wrestler but it is what it is in that respect. Speaking of Suicide, he is the X-Division Champion but it is going to be interesting on if he does get unmasked or some storyline going on in the first place.
The Knockouts Division seems to be pretty much full of Knockouts that didn't wrestle in WWE aside from Christy Hemme, whom is recovering from a serious neck injury.
The current champion is Awesome Kong and right now the only two-time Knockouts champion. She has been built as practically invincible and it would look like a big deal defeating Kong for the championship. There is ODB but technically she never actually appeared on WWE TV and was the first to come from OVW directly to the company itself.
Just a bit of random trivia.
As for the tag team division, the big name tag team would be Team 3D, whom got famous in ECW but also had a nice run in WWE. The current tag team champions are Beer Money Inc. consisting of Robert Roode and James Storm. Now, they are currently feuding with Team 3D in a way to put them over as a power tag team.
There are other teams such as The Motor City Machine Guns, LAX, and other teams mostly from TNA directly or independent wrestling.
In terms of the Main Event scene, it could use some improvement aside from having AJ Styles and Samoa Joe in the top of the line up. There are other men with some potential like a Christopher Daniels, Kaz, or maybe Matt Morgan. Abyss could use a chance at a run. Going back to Matt Morgan, he never did much in WWE but could become a major player in TNA if he keeps improving himself. They are moving towards the present slowly but mostly it seems like the past because of the big names on top and looking to stay that way for some time.

I really do not know how or why this question was even asked. How can Total Nonstop Action (TNA) Wrestling be considered a thing of the past? I don't understand this.
Being a long-time fan of WWE and WCW wrestling, I have watched them for years. I found WWE to be growing stale back in the 90s and I used to flip-flop the remote back and forth between the two wrestling organizations every Monday and Thursday night. At that time, I mostly watched WCW and just the main event on WWE. After WCW died, I was stuck with WWE as the only real option. Even then I grew tired of the WWE and took breaks for few months at a time. That is until TNA showed up with its first television show.
I believe that TNA is the future of pro wrestling because it focuses more on wrestling than entertainment than the WWE. Sure, since the superstars like Christian, Angle, Nash, and Sting were added to the roster, a little bit of the entertainment has been added to TNA and the loss of the NWA title has been a negative to some fans. But I am a bigger fan than ever because, even with some of the negative happenings, I still believe that TNA is much more entertaining than WWE at this time.
I really do believe that Total Nonstop Action Wrestling is a thing of the present for the time being. Will it always be? I think that will be time can tell what decisions to TNA will make it a future and how the WWE will counter them with competition. The WWE is a cunning adversary and Vince will resort to underhanded methods undermining the future of TNA. Vince says that he single-handedly killed WCW but I think that the bad management at WCW is what killed WCW. So, if TNA can avoid the bad management, I believe that TNA can be the WCW of the future during their golden years with the NWO.
If you are a fan of TNA, stay loyal and try to keep TNA competitive against the WWE because competition is always good. If we give up now and consider TNA a thing of the past, we are, in effect, throwing the towel in on a hard-fought match before TNA has even been given the chance to show that it can stand toe to toe with the WWE. We need to stick with TNA in its infancy and to always think positive!
