Pregnancy generally lasts about 9 calendar months, 40 weeks or 280 days. Typically, pregnancy is discussed in terms of Trimesters, which each last for three calendar months. During the first trimester, the woman usually learns she is pregnant and may seek prenatal care. The first trimester is the time of primary organ development for the fetus. The second trimester is considered the most tranquil for the pregnant woman. Morning sickness passes and quickening the feeling the baby move occurs. In the third trimester the woman becomes anxious for the pregnancy to the end. She may feel awkward because of her increasing weight, the Physical and psychological changes she experiences. Maybe the person is not aware of it at first, or could not understand the Anatomy and Physiology of his body, and She may ignore the facts, but their will be always signs of Pregnancy, that even the youngest pregnant women could determine. We have signs of Pregnancy such us Subjective, Objective and Diagnostic.

1.Subjective (Presumptive) Changes. Symptoms experienced by woman. Amenorrhea or absence of menstruation, nausea and vomiting, excessive fatigue, urinary frequency, changes in breast, quickening or mothers perception of fetal movement. Changes in pigmentation of the skin, the linea nigra, a line of the dark pigment on the abdomen. Melasma, the dark pigments on the face and Striae gravidarum, the red streaks on the abdomen.

2.Objective (Probable) Changes. Signs perceived by the examiner. Changes in the pelvic organs such as Goodell's Sign or Softening of the cervix. Chadwick's sign or bluish discoloration of the cervix, and Hegar's sign the softening of the Isthmus, the area between the cervix and the body of the Uterus. The enlargement of the abdomen; Braxton Hicks contraction, these are rhythmic contractions of the uterus that are painless initially but become noticeable, and sometimes uncomfortable, toward term or the end of pregnancy. Ballotment, fetus can be felt to rise against abdominal wall when lower uterine segment is tapped during bimanual examination. Fetal outline palpable during examination, and Positive Pregnancy Test.

3.Diagnostic (positive) Changes. The Verification of gestational sac or fetal parts and heartbeat through Ultrasonography and detection of fetal heartbeat and fetal movements determined by a trained examiner.

We also have psychological responses of the mother to pregnancy, which is related to hormonal changes and to the body's effort to prepare for childbirth and parenting which are considered normal.

1.Ambivalence. Initially, even if pregnancy is planned, the mother may have mixed feeling about it. She may have concerns about her career, her relationship with her partner, financial implications, and role changes, she may make comments such us "I thought I wanted a baby now that I'm pregnant, I'm not so sure."

2.Acceptance of Pregnancy. As the woman begins to accept reality of the pregnancy she shows a high degree of tolerance for the discomfort she may experience. She may begin wearing maternity clothes and may make a comment such as "Feeling the baby move make it seem real" or " I'm going to be a mother."

3.Introversion. The expectant woman typically becomes inwardly focused, less interested in outside activities. She is using this time to plan and adjust. Her partner may see this as excluding him. She may say, "I never used to be alone but now I like having time to myself just to think and plan."

4.Mood Swings. Mood swings from joy to sadness are common and difficult for woman and her family. She often feels a great need for love and affection, need more attention but her partner, confused by her emotional changes, may react by withdrawing. She may say " I'm not usually emotional but lately any little things can set me off."

5.Changes in body image. Typically the woman tends to feel somewhat negative about her body as pregnancy progresses. Her increasing abdomen coupled with the waddling gait may cause a woman to feel unattractive. She may say "I can't even see my feet anymore" or "I feel, I am big as a house".

Based on Maternal and Neonatal Facts, unless the woman has a certain disease or abnormalities that may affects his mental, physical and psychological functions she may not determine her pregnancy. For a normal woman it is impossible to give birth without knowing it.

The general response to a story or claim of a woman giving birth without having known she was pregnant ranges from incredulity to outright insult. People assume that the woman is lacking in intelligence, is morbidly obese, or is lying. Up until recently, without having given the possibility much thought, I, sadly, admit to having been equally small minded, having assumed the only way it was possible would be in extremely large women who might not feel the movements due to their size, and perhaps had irregular cycles as many women do.

Discovery Health has begun airing a show that focuses on these cases, women who did not realize they were pregnant until they give birth, and it is an eye opening show! Admittedly, some of the women did face many symptoms and I have watched a few episodes wondering how they didn’t put two and two together, but there are also many that are wildly plausible.

If a woman has had a tubal ligation, or her partner has had a vasectomy, chances are that pregnancy would be the farthest thing from her mind, especially if the pregnancy is asymptomatic or if the symptoms can easily be explained away to diet, stress, other known health issues or changes in lifestyle.

Likewise, if a woman has been told that she is infertile or would have extreme difficulty getting pregnant, unless she was attempting fertility therapy, few women would jump to the conclusion that they have defied the odds and become pregnant unassisted, when more likely explanations are available.

So, how do these women explain away or not notice their symptoms?

Weight gain is a noticeable symptom of pregnancy. However, the amount gained varies in all pregnancies, and in some of these cases no weight was gained, occasionally some was even lost. Many women do struggle with their weight and fluctuations are easily explained away if the diet is poor, stress is high, and exercise routines are not followed.

Morning sickness makes many women miserable whether for a week or the whole nine months, but some women are blessed not to have it. If a woman is not expecting to be pregnant, doesn’t believe that pregnancy is a possibility, a week of morning sickness could easily be explained away as a stomach bug.

The baby bump seems to be the hardest sign for people to accept not occurring, but there are a rare bunch of women who just never look pregnant, or the other set who always look pregnant, they just happen to carry their weight in their tummy. If their weight doesn’t change and they and everyone around them is used to them having a tummy, it’s not impossible that no one would think of pregnancy.

Heartburn is a symptom of pregnancy, poor diet, and many, many other causes, a woman who experiences heartburn is unlikely to have the epiphany that they are expecting a baby!

Missed period is a strong indicator of pregnancy. There are, however, many women who suffer from irregular cycles, and it is not impossible for a woman to have cycles so irregular that they miss many cycles in a row. It is also possible to have spotting or bleeding during pregnancy that are not menstruation but could be mistaken for a period.

Fetal movement is another seemingly impossible to miss symptom of pregnancy. However every baby is different, the strength of the movement varies. Some women have mistaken this for indigestion. Some women who have carried babies to term have what I call “ghost movements” afterwards. Similar to the phenomenon of an amputee feeling their missing limb, some women have occasional feelings of fetal movement after their babies have been born, sometimes for years after.

Mood swings can easily be explained away. Life is stressful and people handle stress differently, there are hormone fluctuations, poor sleep, there are lots of reasons that people become moody, especially women.

Cravings are usually connected with pregnancy; however, in times of stress or emotional upset, many people (not just women) go straight to their comfort food. Strange cravings are also explained away as the body’s way of dealing with a deficiency. Any of these symptoms alone or a few together are reasonably explained away if there is no perceived possibility of pregnancy. It becomes less and less likely the more symptoms are being explained away, but again, if someone believes that it is impossible, the person is going to search for logical explanations first before believing the impossible has happened.
