Buy

Costumes are switched out all the time for people: a Barbie princess one year, a Disney princess the next year, a Goth princess the year after, then the punk rocker princess next, etc. So why am I on the buy side of the debate topic?

Well, it's pretty simple. First off, how many people have re-worn a costume at least once, even if it was changed up? For most of us, it's occurred at least one time. And if you didn't, I'm pretty sure you regret not having had one of the many costumes you wore to wear again, or to give to somebody that would fit it perfect, etc. But even then, you might say that to buy a costume every year wouldn't be cost efficient, and it would be a waste of money overall. However, most costumes can do used again in so many ways, especially if you put the costume together rather than having rented a whole set. Of course, renting a gorgeous costume once in a while would be fun, especially if it's very expensive, but this article isn't titled "What would be more fun to do once in a while?"

One year (and this was recent), I had a friend who created her own pirate wench costume, and she purchased some not-so-expensive black boots because they were on sale and she figured that she would never wear them again. It's true that she never wore the actual costume again, but she learned to love the boots and still wears them sometimes.

I have another friend that purchased an actual costume. More specifically, it was an adult bee costume that was cute and fit her well, and was also on sale. Like my other friend, she never wore it again, but she did transform the minidress into a tank top, after she removed the black frills underneath. There on afterwards, she always turned some piece of her costume into something she could wear on a regular basis.

But the only point of this article isn't the reusability/cost-efficiency. It's also the sentimental value that it could bring. How wonderful it would be to have a costume with so many memories hung up in your room that you could one day wear again or give to someone else that deserves it and would look good in it. And if that doesn't work for you, donating costumes to people that don't have anything for Halloween is always another option, rather than just building on the money Halloween costume rental shops earn annually from people that rent costumes every year. To those people, regardless of their socio-economic status, holiday memories represent much less regarding costumes, although it does not necessarily have to do with anything else. However, people that truly enjoy the holiday know that the costume and dressing up is a huge part of the fun and enjoyment.

Costumes shouldn't be regarded as merely costumes- they truly are a representation of who you are and reveals so much about you. Why even spend so much time on something that will be rented for a week or so?

Take the smarter route and buy your costumes. It will not only be helpful to you in the future, but will prove to add that much more to your holiday memories and sentiments.

Rent

When it comes to deciding whether to rent or to buy a costume it makes sense to take into consideration how much use you intent to get out of it. How often do you plan to dress as a jester? On a daily basis? Once a year? Or possibly never again. Purchasing a costume you will probably never use again is a waste of money.

There is also the problem of storage. You may attend, say, twelve fancy dress events in your adult life, spread over many years. That is unless you are absolutely potty about dressing up in costumes. But for most of us, we will want to wear different outfits, for each occasion, that our friends haven't seen us in before. If we purchase all twelve costumes we will not have room for our usual clothing in our closets.

Part of the fun of costumes is being able to pick out a new one especially for each event. Costume hire shops have a huge variety of outfits and accessories to choose from. They also have experience with their trade and can help you to find the best costume to suit your needs.

As the years go by many of us change in size a little. If we purchase a costume in our twenties then it may not fit, or suit us, when in our fifties. We may have looked great as a psychedelic hippie when twenty one years of age, but at fifty-eight we may not look quite right in the same costume.

Its not usually difficult to get to a costume hire shop as they seem to be everywhere. Fancy dress costumes tend to differ in price depending on where you go, so if you shop around you are bound to find a good deal to suit your budget.

Costume hire shops have to look after their costumes. They will dry clean them and keep them in good condition in-order to be able to reuse them. If you have your own costume that you have paid for, after a wild party you are likely to not get around to cleaning it. It’s much more likely to suffer in appearance as a result.

When hire shops costumes wear out, or are beginning to look bad, they tend to be sold off as they are not in good enough condition to rent out anymore. If you buy one of these you will be in a costume which is on its last legs, as opposed to a hired costume in great condition.

If you and your friends are all going to the same event you can usually get good value deals from a costume hire shop if you group together and rent at the same time. This also means that only one person in the group needs to pick up and return the costumes, saving time and money.

You will be required to pay a deposit on your costume before you rent it. This is usually a minimal price and covers some minor, accidental damage should it occur. The shop itself will be insured and if you really accidentally wreck a costume they will keep your deposit. But it’s unlikely to really cover the full cost of the costume. If you had purchased it and spoiled it would cost you much more to replace than it would as a deposit on a hired costume.
