The U.S. Government is no more qualified to advise doctors on medical treatments than the health insurance companies are. Unfortunately in both cases this is a situation that is occurring all too frequently. The U.S. Government feels compelled to interject itself into every aspect of our lives, whether it is warranted or whether it is qualified to do so or not. Each and every day we give up a little more of our freedom by allowing the government a little more control over our lives when we do not stand up for ourselves.
In the case of medical treatments your doctor should have the final say in what is best for his patients. All too often doctor's choices are limited either by the government or by the health insurance company. People and entities that do not have the medical qualifications to treat patients should not be involved in the decision of treatments. This is a simple fact, one that the government takes seriously in the malpractice lawsuits that are forever appearing before the court system. Yet this is something the government seems to fail to enforce when it comes to both itself and the insurance companies.
There is clearly a biased philosophy on the part of the government when it comes to issues of this nature. Special interests and campaign donors seem to win out when it comes to issues of money and who will make the most profit. The fact that the government is going out of its way to ban U.S. citizens from acquiring their much needed prescriptions from companies outside of the country is a clear indication of the true intentions of their actions. While the claim is put forth that the government is looking out for the well being of its citizens by ensuring they do not purchase tainted or dangerously unregulated medications, the real reasons are profit.
Pharmaceutical and medical companies are in bed with the government. They contribute massive amounts of money to both political parties to ensure the individuals in power return the favor. The government enforces the need for citizens to purchase medications from in country sources, the in country sources increase the prices for their products since they now have a monopoly on the market and wind up raking in huge profits which in turn are fed back to the politicians in various forms. It's an unscrupulous exploitation of the American people that needs to stop.
Far from helping the average citizen, the government is going out of its way to ensure those that are already cash strapped and cannot afford medical treatment are even further burdened by the ridiculously high prices placed on even the most basic maintenance medications. The entire health care industry in the United States is on the verge of collapse as it is pricing itself out of the reach of the average citizen. The government is constantly forced to come up with new social programs to help enable people of all walks of life the ability to acquire the medicines they need. This in turn results in more government jobs, higher taxation and more opportunities for politicians the ingratiate themselves with wasteful spending.
Let the decisions of medical treatment remain with those qualified to handle them. Make the government return control of medicine to the doctors. Take a stand and tell the government we do not need it interfering in our lives any more than it already does. Take back some of the freedom that you are being robbed of on an on going basis.

The question is not should the US government tell doctors what they can or cannot prescribe to their patients, the fact is that the government has and continues to do just that. From opiates to "physical enhancement drugs" the government, through the FDA, has banned, outlawed, or made illegal dozens if not hundreds of substances, many of which are drugs in some shape or form. In most cases such bans are driven by public outrage over the given drug's abuse, but not always. Some drugs have been pulled from, or never make it to market because they represent a clear and present danger. What utility is a drug that cures a dozen people, but kills hundreds because the drug is so focused that the side-effects wreck havoc on most peoples already fragile body? Since the question is not if the government should, since it already is, the question then becomes to what extent should we the people allow the government to influence the practice of medicine.
The stark reality is that we must allow the government to monitor the drugs, or the treatments, that doctors prescribe to their patients. Quackery, especially in medicine, is not a new thing by any stretch of the immagination and already we are plagued by homeopaths, chi-based, and herbal quakery to name a few sources of harmful "medicine." This is not debatable. This is not in question. Homeopathy, chi, and "herbal" medicine kill thousands of people a year not because they are particularly dangerous in and of themselves (herbs are drugs and are dangerous in and of themselves), but because these treatments do NOTHING! There is no evidence for efficacy in the use of homeopathy or chi healing, they are both dangerous because patients have been known to go off their secular medications and treatments because they "believe" that these things are going to help them, and some (I dare say many) have died as a result. As I have said before herbs are drugs and the unregulated and/or unsupervised consumption of "herbal remedies" can have drastic and deadly reactions with prescribed drugs.
I say that we need the government to step in. We need the government because the dangers of unregulated "supplements" are just as real. Treatments can be made that kill all cancers, but the side effect can be death itself. Without government regulation there would be scores more drug and treatment related deaths per day, month, and year.
