Should PetSmart stop selling live animals? No they shouldnt. Why? Because it gives the animals a better chance at life. What they should do though, is make the people buying the animals take an application to see what the home situation is going to be like before the animals go into it. They need to go to a good home. They dont need to go to a home where the owners are going to kill them or use them for some kind of bait or food.
Another reason why I think that they shouldn't stop selling the animals is because it is better for them to sell the animals, then the animals going to a shelter or kennel where they aren't going to be taken care of as well. I have been to PetSmart countless times and they take really good care of their animals, unlike kennels. They are doing a good job making sure that these animals are staying out of places like that.
When you walk into a PatSmart, look around sometimes at the habitats they have for all of their animals. What do you see? I see homes for the animals. I see cover for the animals. I see food all the time in the cages for the animals. D you see that at kennels? And why shouldn't PetSmart keep selling animals? PetSmart is taking care of the animals even before they give them to other people. PetSmart buys animals from people to stop neglect, abuse, and to stop people from taking their pets to the pound/kennel.
I myself would rather have PetSmart sell my animal or give my animal a home, than a kennel or pound. They are people that I trust with animals. I trust that they will insure the animals safety when it leaves the store. Can the kennels? No, because when that animal leaves the kennel God knows what kind of illness that animal has, whereas PetSmart vacinates all its animals and they keep doing it even after that animal has left the store.
So all in all, I would say that they are doing a great job and deserve to continue selling animals into homes that are loving and not abusive. I have gotten countless animals from them and I have never had any problems with them. They were always clean and fed when I got them and they never died because of an illness. I have sued kennels before because the animal I got has died right after they got home because a sickness they got from the kennel that the kennel has known about. I have always won my battles.
So please everyone, choose to have them still sale pets. They are very trustworthy.

When you buy an animal from a store you are opening yourself up for disaster. Most of the animals sold in pet stores come from 'breeders' who over-breed their animals, inbreed and fail to provide proper medical care or even just the bare minimum of proper care. Pet stores perpetuate the cycle. While PetSmart does quite a bit of good in the aspect of helping shelter animals find homes, that doesn't alter the fact that they are lining the pockets of those who only care about profit.
PetSmart has had many complaints about animals being bought from them already sick or dying. In order to protect the people who want small animals, we have to ensure that the animals they bring into their homes are healthy. Seeing a little girl's face when her just bought hamster or guinea pig mysteriously dies is truly gut-wrenching. Because of lax enforcement and regulations serious health issues go untreated until it's too late. Why would anyone want to hurt their child or themselves by buying a dying animal from a corporation that is more worried about their own finances than the welfare of the animals they sell and the people who buy?
In my opinion, PetSmart should only help local shelters adopt their animals out. Small animal rescues, birds and fish can all be found as rescues and by helping place homeless animals we are fighting the industry of critter-milling. If no-one buys from the animal factory, they lose money which in turn causes them to find something else to do for their money. Stricter Federal guidelines should be in place to protect the animal and the consumer from these greedy profiteers not only for the good of a few but for the good of the entire country. Selling an animal in a pet store leaves people buying animals that may or may not be genetically healthy. These animals deserve much better than they'd been given previously, however, buying them perpetuates the problem.
No pet store should be allowed to participate in the disturbing cycle of neglect, abuse and selfishness. No amount of money is worth the disgusting situation these animals come from. It's a case of choosing the lesser of two evils. Don't buy them from pet stores, the pet store won't buy from the 'distributor' and in the long run fewer creatures will end up going through the pain, neglect and abuse committed. It seems cruel not to 'rescue' these animals but in reality all that you are doing by 'rescuing' them is perpetuating the cycle.
