The idea of the State Government allowing an individual to purchase health insurance from an out of state company or one located in the state is characteristic of the interference of the state in the personal decision of the consumer. It is the consumer who should decide which health insurance he or she purchases and which one would be beneficial in terms of price as well as service. Many times the State Government or Government in general interferes in what should be the decision of the consumer and in the end it is the consumer who loses. In fact, the United States of America has a crisis secondary to the interference of the Government in the Daily Activities of the people and that includes health care.
The consumer is the sole owner of his or her own destiny and that includes being responsible for decisions made in the right way or wrong way in choosing a health care insurance. The fact that the health care insurance is based in a certain state, out of state, or even out of country should not even be placed in the equation. The important thing is that the company is a solid company, with a good price range, and a great service with great coverage for the consumer. It is these things that the consumer has to look for without the eyes of the state or politicians who lack the scruples. This is the way the United States of America was founded. Let the consumer decide which Health Care Insurance Company is best for him or her.
The State Government or Government for that matter has too much on the plate and cannot juggle everything. It is for this reason that the Consumer should be in charge of what Insurance Company would help his or her Health Care Needs. It is enough that the State Government has involved itself in Health Care to the point that the programs do not work. We only have to look at the problems that Oregon has faced with the Oregon Health Plan since the economy in America has deteriorated. We only have to look at Tennessee and Tenn Care and see how the people have abused Tenn Care to the point where the future looks bleak and even a return to a traditional Medicaid Program in Tennessee will be detrimental to the consumer while the special interest groups, insurance companies, politicians, and certain health care providers receive the dividends from the state interfering in the affairs of the health care consumers. The State Government should give the Health Care Consumer a break by not interfering in his or her decision to but Health Care Insurance regardless of its origin. Let the Market Forces dictate where to purchase.

State government should have no say in who I choose for health insurance or any other insurance. The micro management of the insurance industry by the various state governments is a hindrance to free market enterprise offerings of insurance. Individual state based regulation of the insurance industry is inconsistent at best and at worst caustic to the industry. Over complicated government rules and regulations on what insurance carriers are permitted to do and what is required of residents is detrimental to both the insurance industry and the consumer.
This is yet another clear example of how we let government rule over an area of our lives that we should be the sole administrators. Such things result in bloated and inefficient government, depression of the market they are regulating and higher costs with fewer choices for the consumer. I don't deny that in order to protect consumers from the self serving interests of the health insurance industry that some government regulation isn't warranted. Such legislation should come from the federal level though, not the state level.
If regulated at the federal level the regulations would be country wide, easier to understand and allow for greater competition throughout all states. Having such a matter handled at the federal level also allows for a certain amount of transparency which you would never see at the state level. Being regulated at the state levels provides far too ripe a field for opportunistic politicians looking to utilize their office to advance their own agendas and careers. While back room dealing certainly occurs at the federal level, it is done under a much higher level of scrutiny than your state congressman or senator is ever subject to.
States cry out for states rights, and home rule. An all too common motto in the name of protecting the individual rights of their citizens. When in fact it is exactly this type of mentality that robs citizens of their rights and freedoms all in the name of enriching the very politicians that are claiming to have interest in the common citizens needs. Regulating health insurance is just one more example of how the state is intruding ever further into the rights and freedoms of it's citizens. We need less government regulation rather than more. We need to reclaim some of the freedoms that we've lost.
The choice of health insurance carriers is one that requires a great deal of personal consideration. We must be able to choose the carrier that best suites our needs and our families needs in life. Having the state government determine which carriers we can use and not use on a totally arbitrary basis robs the average citizen of their ability to choose the best offering. Only you know what is best for you and your family. Which makes you the only qualified person to make such a personal decision. Surely not the state government.
