With Brett Favre, you really never can tell. But my guess is that no, this will not be his last year in the National Football League. As long as he stays healthy, I could envision him playing even 2-3 more years.

For the past couple of seasons, there has been a lot of speculation about whether or not Favre would be returning, speculation he helped fuel by being less than forthcoming with his situation. However, he always came back, ready to go another year. Coming into the 2007 season, he called this perhaps the most talented Packers team he had been on, a statement that was scoffed at a bit by sports fans and media everywhere. However, that statement doesn't look so crazy anymore.

I think one of the biggest reasons Favre will be back is that he loves playing with these guys, they are good, and they are still a very young team and should continue to improve. With very minimal changes the Packers should be able to continue to be successful into the future because of their talented youth at key positions, and I think Brett Favre will want to be a part of that. His receivers love playing for him and he loves playing with them.

Another thing, and it sounds cliche, but it really does look like Brett Favre is having fun and enjoying himself out there. He's getting a lot older and his body has to be starting to break down (or at least, you would think), but he is still out there every single week with a smile on his face. It's hard to see him giving that up at a time when the Packers are so successful and he himself is having a little bit of a revival in 2007-08.

So obviously with Brett Favre it's impossible to predict what he will do - we've been down that road the past couple of seasons with him - but my feeling is that, win or lose, he will be back for another season. He's having too much fun, he's still healthy, and the team is still so young and talented. He won't want to give that up.

The day Brett Favre retired was a national day of mourning.
Well, except for Vikings, Lions and Bears fans, and Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers.
The last three individuals are happy because Brady and Manning now get to chase Favre's records without worrying about him setting the bar even higher while Rodgers finally gets his crack.
As a Packers fan, Rodgers worries me. The guy's played sparingly, just 59 pass attempts in three years, and has had two significant injuries in his very short career. He did look good in the Dallas game last year. We just have to wonder if that was a sign of the future or an anomaly.
Both Brady and Manning are great quarterbacks, and both might pass Favre's passing records. While neither has missed a game yet, it's hard to believe either will endure another hundred games injury-free.

Back to Favre, though - I'll be at his induction ceremony in Canton in five years.
He has spoiled not only Packers fans, but all football fans, by simply playing every game and having the Packers as a winning, competitive team year in and year out during his entire career (2005 doesn't count).
His team had just one losing season in 16 years, including an NFL-record 13 straight winning seasons, and that by itself is an amazing accomplishment. He led the Packers to the playoffs 11 times and won seven division titles and a Super Bowl.
He's got more wins than anybody else, more touchdown passes, more yards, more MVPs and is easily the most universally-loved quarterback of the last 20 years.
Hell, he was the leading vote getter for the Pro Bowl - the ninth Pro Bowl of his career - in his final season. That's a sign of the respect the guy garnered during a fabulous season, which would have been an MVP season had it not been for Brady's 50 TDs.
Favre is retiring, but he will never be forgotten. A street in Green Bay bears his name, intersecting Lombardi Boulevard. With so many former Green Bay players in the Pro Football Hall of Fame players, Favre made himself the greatest Packers player ever, and arguably the greatest quarterback to ever step onto an NFL field.
All I'd love to say to the guy is thank you.
