Are You Ready for The One Who Will Come Like a Thief In The Night?
Are we close to the battle of Armageddon? Without a doubt, my answer is yes. Armageddon is the ultimate battle between the forces of good and evil foretold by the prophets, and documented by them in the Bible. Satan will do his work through the one Christians know as the Antichrist at Megiddo, a location that was a place of many decisive battles in ancient times. How close are we to the onset of this event? No one knows. What makes me think that we are close is from looking at history, through the Bible. If you look at the tower of Babel, and what they were trying to do, you can see that there is a similar train of thought that is emerging in our world today. If you believe the events of the Bible, you know what happened to those guys.
Sure, people have been thinking at many points in history that "this has to be the end" because the times were worse than any had seen before, shocking, and scaring them so much so that they were positive that nothing could be worse. What if the thought process about the events that lead up to Armageddon is not viewed with the right perspective? Many believe that the events will be very close, within a few years of Armageddon, but what if generations past have lived through many of those leading events already? WW1, WW2...remembering in the scriptures..."There will be wars and rumors of wars.", and certainly, the battles and circumstances nearest to the end will be of the likes the world has never known; but perhaps our journey to the battle of Armageddon has already started. Haven't the floods, hurricanes and other natural disasters over the years been greater than those in past history as of late? God's timeline is nothing like our own, after all.
I did read recently that there was additional fighting over the Gaza Strip, and I don't have to point out the significance of that area of the world in Biblical Prophecy, and that alone is not what makes me believe that we are close to Armageddon. The reason I think we are close is because of the similarities to the behaviors that were taking place in the early times when God had seen enough and took action. As I mentioned earlier, there is the tower of Babel, and then don't forget Noah and the flooding of the earth. In addition, years ago, it would be impossible for one man to take control over the entire earth...but now, with credit cards containing RFID chips, and the bio-implant technology, already introduced...well, you can see where I'm going with this.
Society today is working overtime trying to kill God. It is almost acceptable to say God, but if you say Jesus, you are labeled a crackpot by many. One reason for this, I think, is because Jesus lived on earth so long ago...to us. If you think about how old the universe is, and think of what time means to God, it was just like he was here last week. Even if you look at things from our perspective of time you begin to understand this idea of how God views time. Think of your own life, if you are in your forties, fifties or older, you are probably in awe of how fast time passes. If you are younger, you probably think you will never be old. I know I didn't. We somehow believe we are invincible when we are young.
When did we first land on the moon? That was only about forty years ago. We went to the moon, people. If you look at what can be achieved in forty years it boggles the mind. Every generation advances so that the generation before claim, "We never imagined that was possible." Microwave ovens, automobiles, think about these advances. In addition to these conveniences we should also look at the other side of the coin. There is terrorism, here in America, advanced weapons, horrid weapons such as biological and chemical weapons that would probably disgust the early scientist that worked on traditional weaponry.
The day the plane hit the twin towers, I remember thinking how I just wanted to be with my son, who was only about a year old and was in daycare while I was at work. I thought, and so did some others, that it was the end of the world, or at least the start of world war three, but it wasn't, of course. It was, however, a sign of what is to come. Watch the signs; they are outlined clearly in the Bible. To God, a couple of thousand years is nothing but a blink of an eye. If you present it that way, maybe a non believer would not think it is absurd to believe that a carpenter, God in human form, died so long ago for us, in order to save us.
He felt pain, fear, and hunger, just like we do. God cannot have sin before him, so we cannot get to heaven by just by our deeds alone, because we are not perfect. Many will ask me, "But many religions teach similar things as a great figure who leads to peace or good deeds much like the Ten Commandments. So how can you know that your way is the only way, with so many other similar religions teaching peace and goodness?"
I have an answer to that one. There are snippets of truth to many of those religions, which is why they are so dangerous. It is one of Satan's most powerful tricks, confusion of the soul. The difference in those religions is that most of them claim that through good deeds, there is a "path" to heaven. There is no "path" to heaven. We are full of sin and will always be, therefore, the creator, who is always greater than the creation, knew that because of our sin, we could never be with him, so he paid the price for all of our sins by dying on the cross in human form, and gave us a choice...the choice to believe in him, or not.
We can try to be the best Christians we can be. Follow the Ten Commandments, but only if you believe that God did take human form and allow his human form to die on the cross, to pay for our sins and then defied death, will you be allowed to enter the gates of heaven. If you were God, and you did this for your people, your creation, and they wouldn't even do the one thing he asked, one small thing; open your heart to him, and believe that he loved you so much that he died to take your sins upon himself so that you could be with him in heaven how would you feel? He hurts, and the time known as the Tribulation is a gift, a second chance to ask him to be with you, in your heart. Even after he brings the believers home, he gives those left behind a second chance to be with him. Those who do live through the tribulation will be living through the most horrifying times of the likes the world has never known.
For some, they have already accepted this, that without believing in Christ, you will not get into heaven...for others, it will take much more. Some will understand this only after the Tribulation begins, and they see the horrors of the antichrist come to fruition. I feel a great sadness for those who come to God during the Tribulation and a great admiration for the faith and the courage they must have in order to follow Christ at such a terrible time, when Christians will be hunted and killed for their beliefs, with no safe place on this earth for them.
Watch the signs. Yes, the war in the Middle East has been going on for thousands of years; however, the war on terror, and our presence in the Middle East, signals the end times are coming. We all know that things will not improve over there, but only worsen. How long will it be before the actual tribulation will begin? No one knows, but we were given a book, a great book that outlines what to look for, The Holy Bible.
As far as the end times, and the battle of Armageddon go, what is important is that you don't treat it like a test you can cram for the night before. You must allow the tugging at your heart to transform you, whenever that happens. When God knocks, be sure to answer and let him come into you...follow your heart and let it happen, don't turn away. Give up the fake control you think you have to God, and let him help you to know what to do. If you accept Jesus as your savior, who washed away your sins with his blood on the cross at Calvary...you will not be afraid of the end times, you will look forward to it because that is when you will be with Jesus, in heaven. Also, the sooner you realize the truth, the sooner you can share it. You can save not just lives, but what is important...souls, by spreading the truth to others who don't believe, helping those who are lost.
Eternal life does not begin when you die and go to heaven, it begins here on earth. I know that once I realized that I didn't control my life, and asked God what to do...he has guided me to do his will, and I am no longer lost, wondering what it all means. When you have Jesus live inside of you, you don't worry about the end times, but you do worry about those you love who are not believers. To a Christian, waiting for the time of Christ's return, is a lot like a child anticipating waking on Christmas morning to find gifts under the tree.
I know there are some reading this who probably think I may be a Christian because I am afraid of Hell (and who isn't? It sounds terrifying), or because I use it as a crutch (that is a common saying), but those reasons are not why I am a Christian. I was raised in the church, but never really "got it". God showed me a series of events later in life, when I was older and had lived enough to have the wisdom to allow him to help me understand and grow in a real faith.
The change actually started with a nurse I had never met before in a psyche ward after I was burned and raped. She was so kind to me in my darkest hour. She listened to me and held me as I cried. She wiped away my tears. She cared about someone she had never met that was in need in a world so full of selfishness. I imagined what it must have felt like to be living during the times when Christ was on earth, when so many who were lost and desperate were embraced by Jesus himself. I thought that if I felt that much comfort and safety in the arms of that nurse, who was a Christian, then to be embraced by Jesus himself, must be an unimaginable love that can heal the most broken of souls. That realization put me on the road to heal my soul. I knew, somehow, that all I had been raised to believe was true, all because of a love and compassion imparted to a nurse by Jesus Christ. It was the love inside of her that I was feeling...God's love. She didn't preach to me, only mentioned that Jesus could help me in my time of need and that he had helped her in a similar way...she had also been raped. It wasn't that alone that did it for me. That incident just opened my eyes and my heart to the concept of pure love, a love like nothing on Earth.
God gave me a few kicks in the rear to bring me back to him...and trust me, I needed it. I have always been hard headed. If not for God's intervention, I would probably be dead by the time I was thirty. Every single thing happens for a reason. You must know that you will not understand why God does everything he does...but you will know the reason for some things. He is God, the creator of all things...why on earth would you think you would understand all that he does? It is that arrogance that keeps some of us separated from God.
Are the end times coming? Yes, but the time and hour of this is known to no man or woman. Besides, this is not the most important question you should ask yourself. The question that is the most important when discussing Armageddon is this: Who is going to be ready to leave with Christ when the time comes?
Are you ready for the one who will come like a thief in the night?

As a Christian believer in the second coming of Christ, I am probably going against the mainstream thought by saying I don't believe that Armageddon will ever happen. The end of the world, yes, but this great battle, no. In fact, just recently, my pastor gave a sermon on this very topic. I'm inclined to agree with him, because after being in a church for so many years that believes in there being a battle at the time of the end, I now look at the entire book of Revelation in a completely different way.
The book of Revelation is a remarkable piece, filled with literal and symbolic content. So many studies have been done on each chapter, because of the vivid descriptions of the various types of churches, nations, and foreshadowings of history's end. Similar to dreams, visions describe events to come, but can also represent behaviors and point out specific warnings. This book, then, contains all of those elements. For those reasons, I don't believe anyone can completely interpret all of what is described.
John's Background
In order to understand this battle of Armageddon and the book of Revelation, we must first look at the author of this book - the apostle John. Who was he? He was the son of Zebedee, and brother of James, who was another follower of Jesus. He and his family were fishermen. In those days, that profession was considered manual labor for the lowly, and therefore no one usually took notice of them beyond the need of their bounty. However, Jesus was interested in both John and his brother James, with the intent on making them fishers of men, leading souls to God's kingdom. They were not eloquent speakers, nor did they have ample amounts of money. Yet, their devotion to the Lord touched Jesus' heart. Together along with another follower by the name of Peter, they witnessed Jesus raise a young girl from the dead. They were privy to Jesus' transfiguration on the mountain, where they saw Moses and Elijah, and were spoken to by God. All three wrote books in the Bible to give their accounts of Jesus' life and to speak to the people on understanding future prophecy regarding the end of the world. But only John went a step further, and upon his imprisonment on the island of Patmos, was given a vision from God. He wrote out the details in great length, spanning 22 chapters.
The intent of his vision was to be forewarned of the end of time and Jesus' return. This is not unusual news, as the Bible tells this very thing over and over again through various Old Testament prophets and of course all the other disciples of Jesus who had witnessed his crucifixion, his victory over death, and his ascension into Heaven. Yet Revelation is a completely different book from all the rest. Yes, it is known that since the Garden of Eden, the evil angel Satan had been banished to Earth to lead humans into sin, so as to deter as many people as he is able from following God's plan for eternal life. Unfortunately, from there faiths tend to differ on what will happen to end Satan's rule on Earth. Too much ado is made about the day of reckoning, and not enough about how to be ready!
The Book of Revelation
At the time of the Lord's return, people will have been living more sinfully than ever before - which is something that seems to be apparent in today's world with people becoming more and more wicked. Then, according to Revelation, the first thing that happens is "...every eye will see him..." (Revelation 1:7). Mention is made about the seven churches (being the types of followers in latter-day times). Each group is given praise or correction in how they lived for the Lord (see Revelation chapters 2-3). Then John is given a view of Heaven, where he says: "At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it" (Revelation 4:2). Similar to what Paul said in Philippians 2:9-11 that "every knee shall bow", John speaks of this indeed happening with hearing "...every creature in heaven and on Earth, and under the Earth, and on the sea, and all that is in them...singing (praise)..." (Revelation 4:13). You notice from the beginning of the book that John seems to be taking note of what he sees happening both in Heaven and on Earth. Then, In chapter 9, the scene is set for what appears to be a battle (see verses 1-11), but in none of Jesus' teachings does it ever say that the day of the Lord is anything more than His return, the end of Satan, and the victory for believers in Christ. Jesus says that "the angels will separate the wicked from the righteous" (Matthew 13:49-50), and that the end of the ages will take place after wars and rumors of wars take place - though nothing cataclysmic (Matthew 24:6). In short, the one element that remains the same from what Jesus says and what John reiterates in Revelation is that there will be many who will try to deceive people into thinking the Lord has returned before the actual event, leading them astray by way of the antichrist and his minions. So in going back to the mention of a "battle", part of what is described relates to the persecution of the saints throughout the ages, when religion had been frowned upon by various ruling parties. It also gives rise to the fact that up to the last day of the Earth, people will be in great unrest, not preparing for a nuclear show-down. Good, honest people will have been led to their deaths unjustly, but that those things must continue to happen until Jesus returns (see Revelation 13:7-10).
When you get to chapter 16:14, it mentions false prophets stirring up the rulers to battle on the day that the Lord returns and names their gathering place as Armageddon (verse 16). Yet, it's funny to think that these people seem to "know" when that day will be, unlike what the Lord says "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father" (Matthew 24:36 and Mark 13:32). Therefore, these people are the same ones who are sensationalists, using scare tactics to bring mankind to submission. Being that people of God will know that the Lord will overcome the world, it is pointless for them to even attempt to engage in any sort of battle. No mention is made of the latter-day saints needing to do so before Jesus returns, or else He would have said so in all His teachings. The end of the ages is also not something that happens all at once, either. Life as we know it simply keeps deteriorating until the wicked seem like they have taken the Earth by force - not as a literal battle, but through all the deception forewarned. I realize it is not clarified further, and for good reason - for who would be deceived if they were given specific instruction on what exactly the wicked would do to sway minds further from God?
Again, there is mention of a battle after "ten kings...will come to power..." but it will be "...a short reign...and then the Lamb will defeat them" (Revelation 17:12-14). Now I believe that when the Lord returns, all the wicked ruling parties will have had dominion over people, so that there is no group with whom to battle, but that as they see the Lord in the clouds, their thoughts will be that of wanting to battle with Him. Of course, that is impossible, as we know the Lord will overcome them in an instant by throwing Satan into the fiery pit and killing all his wicked followers (see Revelation 19:19-21). The next part is somewhat unclear, as Satan is released after 1,000 years and sent to find more wicked people to gather for trying one last time to foil God's plans. I admit, none of this makes sense. Because at that point, it says "When the thousand years are up, Satan will be let loose...and will launch again his old work of deceiving the nations, searching out victims...he'll talk them into going to war and will gather a huge army, millions strong. They'll stream across the earth, surround and lay siege to the camp of God's holy people, the Beloved City. They'll no sooner get there than fire will pour out of Heaven and burn them up. The Devil who deceived them will be hurled into Lake Fire and Brimstone, joining the Beast and False Prophet, the three in torment around the clock for ages without end" (Revelation 20:11-15). And being that this particular mention of battle isn't to where Jesus comes to Earth in the middle of everyone fighting, but that He comes WITH His followers, who watch as Jesus destroys the wicked in their entirety.
There are so many questions about how exactly the final hours of Earth will play out, but I don't think any of it will be the way we as a society have portrayed it through all the movies and books that "foretell" the end of the world. There will always be speculation, but I know without a doubt that we are headed to the point in time as foretold in Revelation. We just never know if at any time Jesus will return, same as we never know if there will be another war that will end millions of lives in an instant. But I don't think we have anything to fear of the battle of Armaggedon, because everything in the Bible assures us that as long as we stand firm in our convictions, and even if we are slaughtered for our beliefs, the Lord will overcome the world and lift us to His kingdom to be with Him for eternity. Why should anything else matter?
